Hearts of Steel #2 (SPOILERS)

Post by Yaya » Thu Aug 17, 2006 2:05 am

Just finished #2.

And liked it.

This story reads exactly like and looks exactly like an unaired episode of the cartoon.

With this in mind, one has to approach this story not with an overly critical eye, as we would with Stormbringer or Infiltration, but with a much more forgiving stance.

It's meant to be fun, and that's how I have found it. It is certainly not without flaws in plot or even in coloring (Starscream is wrongly colored red in one big panel), but its well worth the buy, particularly for those who loved the cartoon.

The redesigns are cool, and I'm actually much more drawn in by the human element in this story than in Infiltration.

Again, I find the darker coloring tone really lends itself in making this story feel like its taking place during that time period. Whereas I felt this browner tone was overdone in Infiltration, here it fits perfectly and I hope it does not change much with the final two issues. And I really hope Guido stays on the book because I'm liking where this book has gone artistically.

I'll give it a "B". Lighthearted Transformery fun with some cool ideas, and I'm surprisingly enjoying this more than Infiltration.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

I got it, I thought it was pretty bent.

The story is a load, I'm not feeling the colouring at all - I dont like the new schemes for certain characers and it often looks flat. I appreciate the old fashioned style, I just dont think a good enough job is being done. Not a fan of the dire-logue where the characters are forever naming eachother after every sentance - not great... It is very much like the cartoon, it's a ****** no-brainer at times.

Dont see why the cons need the help of the little human pleb either.

I thought it had charm last issue, this one I just thought was gash. Not complete cock, but still a bit wanky.

Why? Because, since it's like a cartoon, we should take formulaic plots and throughaly explored ideas (Look, Decepticons trick a human into helping them! Oh that Bumblebee, always making human friends and being curious!) and treat them like we've never seen them before?
but its well worth the buy, particularly for those who loved the cartoon.
Now if you put this post AND that post a while ago where you said you liked the cartoon Origin over the Primus too religiony comic Origin, I still say you love the cartoon.

As far as the comic....yeah, it WAS like the cartoon. In the sense of you can see where it's headed for a mile away, and the journey there, as snarl aptly puts it, is a bit wanky.

Nope, the cartoon overall didn't do too much for me. It was targeted at a much lower age group than the comic and I never got into it.

Having said that, the innocence of the cartoon was at times appealing in some strange way, and I think this is why I am enjoying Hearts of Steel. I can understand where you and snarlz are coming from, and if I were in a more dour mood, I likely would have been more critical.

As it was, I was in a relaxed frame of mind and about to nap off for the night, feeling pretty good.

To be honest, I can't put my finger on why exactly this title so far is appealing to me.

My intellect screams at me to hate this sucker, but I don't. In fact, I started my review of #1 with "Liked it. Don't know why. But I liked it."

Eh, I liked it too.

Apart from the fact that in over 20 years of TF fiction, Josh seems to be the only colourist who can keep tabs on which Seeker is which. FFS, if the characters are identical apart from their colours, PAY ATTENTION TO WHICH ONE YOU ARE COLOURING IN!
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

i didn't mind it, but i think that was more because, as an out of continuity story its a bit throwaway.

if it was in continuity i'd be quite pissed off with it as there is quite a lot that doesn't hold together very well, like the notion of some kind of first contact protocal for the Autobot's especially.

"Hi, i'm Bumblebee and i have arbitrarily decided to show you and offer your race other worldly technology. I haven't really run this by anyone but i'm sure they won't mind"

like i say, i didn't mind it, but there's quite a bit i could pick at in a lot more detail if i had the inclination to do so.

That surprises me. The humans' reactions upon meeting robots from another planet are a lot more believable in Infiltration IMO. As you say, this is just like a cartoon.
