Swoop being a Pterodactyl in the Original Cartoon

Post by 3rd iris » Thu Aug 10, 2006 8:28 pm

I know Swoop was considered a pterodactyl when he transformed, but did any of the characters actually use the word "pterodactyl" to describe him? I can't picture any of them saying that word but my friend says he thinks they did.

I think this would be best answered by re-watching War of the Dinobots, which introduced his character to the cartoon.

If it's not mentioned in there, I doubt it's mentioned anywhere outside of profiles.

Usually he's just described as having an aerial/flight mode.

I thought he was a Pteranodon?

The body shape was based on a pteranodon (which is the most popular breed with that particular head crest), called a pterodactyl (which doesn't actually have a head crest, or not anywhere like as prominent) but to avoid confusion, and due to the massive amount of new breeds discovered in the past 20-odd years, calling him a pterosaur (generic term for flying reptiles of the Mesozoic Era) would be the most correct.

Grimlock sure knew his paleantology.

And a good thing too, considering!

Yeah, I think we can take his word for it. ;) Plus Swoop was his buddy and all...

And... it's backed up by Wiki, but less straight-forwardly so by others, such as Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Oh, didn't know that, I thought pterodactyl is only a name of a certain species. :)

I think he replaces Optimus Prime. I saw him leading the Autobots in a Ladybird book called 'Galvatron's Air Attack'.

I heard that in 2005 he takes the matrix from Optimus and then he's the new leader. What could possibly go wrong?
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Took.

2005 was last year, mate. ;)

Anyway, I heard that was just some 'faked news' leaked by a Decepticon spy in an attempt to destabilise Rodimus' government.

You're right - Pretodactylus is a name for a species of Pterosaurs. They were pretty small (bat-sized) and had a small crest on the head.

I love dinos too... other then TFs and Gobots, the only thing I collect is Dino Riders, some of the best detailed Dinosaur toys ever made. Even the smithsonian museum released some as toys!

But Grimbo was right, since the shortened word 'Pterodactyl' is a refrence to SOME Pterosauria. Brr. English is so difficult with animal names, since they use the latin words. We hungarians call Pterosauria simply 'flying lizards' in common terms.

Yeah, it sound funny when I translate it to english... :D But I mean, you call molluscs molluscs (latin: Mollusca) We have individual names for all these.

...Yeah, I guess you'll laugh again, :D we call molluscs "soft-bodied". :D OK I give up...

You mean like, snails, slugs, ammonites, mussels, etc.?

Looks like we do too.

We just tend to use group names as well to differentiate whether different lifeforms bear any relation to each other or not.

Group names like: apes, primates, prosimians, lizards, sharks, cattle, insects, arthropods, lagomorphs, rodents, fungi, conifers, flora, etc.
