Prime and Xaaron on a non-existing cover?

Over the last 25 years the Transformers have appeared in media from the exquisite to the scribbled and been licensed to the responsible and the... Pat Lee. Discussion of all the branches of TF media within!

Prime and Xaaron on a non-existing cover?

Post by BB Shockwave » Sat Jun 24, 2006 11:42 am

I just got an german G1 toy catalog from 1990, and in the catalog was an advertisement for the running Marvel TF comic..,

The funny thing is, it shows a comic cover that never existed... with Prime and Emirate Xaaron in the background, in the fron Laserbeak and a green Ravage ransack an electrics store (Ravage is stealing video tapes, by the looks of it.. ;) ) and also pictured are whom I guess to be Sparkplug and Buster...

Thought I'd share it with you as a curiosity.

Hmm, yes that's rather unexpected. But I think it's possible the germans got their own covers now and then, for their comics.

Ravage leaping out of a store with Soundwave in his mouth is from the Robot-master story. :)

I... think you're right... Dear lord. That looks vaguely a lot like the gesture Megs did when they utterly smashed the USA fleshlings when he was re-energized.

I thought about Megs too - but this is catalogue from 1990. Megs was pretty much dead by then, and the story was closing to an end. Although, Xaaron and Prime only appeared together on Cybertron...

I too remembered the Robot Master story - but Sparkplug and Buster were nowhere in that.

Germany and Austria had more of these made-up comic covers. I'll try to find an older pic I got in Austria back in 1990, which is only a blue/white sketch featuring OP battling the Predacons, with the Witwickys smiling dumbly in the background.... :)

My best guess is that this ad was made not by Marvel but the company producing their comics in Germany, and they simply hired someone to draw a pic for them.

Btw, for those who don't speak German, the ad says above the 'Transformers' sign: "Galactic Adventure - Robots in fight for peace." :p

I'll also add another curiosity - here in Hungary, the comic's title was reduced to "Transformer" as the editor didn't like the plural form. After so many issues, it was finally dropped and we got "Transformers" at last.

Well, effectively that's all Xaaron is anyway... Megs, minus his fusion cannon and back cannon and painted gold ;)

...and the Robot Master story was five years old!

Megs and Prime seem reminiscent of the very early issues, when they were typically drawn differently from themore common Marvel depictions, and Sparky&Buster bit is definitely from an early ish.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the age of the German publication as a guide to the age of the original issues.

Yeah, looks like a miscoloured Megs. Seems they've rather a '84 mindset for a '90 comic tho. And TFs were a bit old hat by then!

Interesting find. Its nice to see how TFs were depicted in other countries.

I think you're right, Rebis, now that I think about it, TF comics were pulblished here in Hungary around 1992-1994, I remember seeing G2 commercials in a Marvel G1 comic... :)

Hmm, I'll have to check who published TF comics in Germany. Here in Hungary, we had Semic Interprint - and they made some hilarious mistakes.

Like, they started publishing the comic bi-monthly, 2 issues together. All went well until 'Shooting Star' - after that, 'I robot-Master' and Plight of the Bumblebee were left out alltogether, and we continued with 'Cosmic Carnival'... imagine how we were shocked to find Prime is now a Powermaster and a whole lot of new characters were introduced out of the blue. (just like the cartoon).

The editor explained this by saying the previous stories were lost due 'a cosmic accident'... :) later when the G1 comic ended with End of the road, they started releasing the left-out stories. Sadly the whole Tf comic was cancelled after 'Child's Play', so some stories were never translated to Hungarian.

But where is his trademark Fusion Cannon? :D OK, I know it's supposed to be Megs, in a 'background color'. But it's good to think it could be Xaaron...

Someone nicked it? A butterfly flapped its wings in Australia and it fell off his arm? He really should've taken better care of it!
