G1 dvd recommendation

Post by Repticon » Mon Nov 28, 2005 8:33 pm

I want to collect g1 on Dvd but I need some advice. Are the boxsets too expensive right now? Is it true that sony acquired the rights for g1 and will release them on dvd (meaning lower prices)? Which sets do you recommend?

There are some REALLY nice sets on Ebay right now. They're the chinese versions, but should play perfectly in any DVD player. Those would be your best bets at the moment.

Are those chinese DVD-s really good quality? A friend of mine keeps asking me whether he should buy them... (me, I'm content with what I downloaded)

The chinese G1 sets are great, yes. The chinese Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory sets are not so great.

Seconded. The Chinese DVDs are a really great deal. I bought a set, and I'm a very happy customer.

I would say Ebay and buying from other sellers on Amazon (not the Amazon new listed price but the other sellers who sell the items there) are the best way to go if you want to save a few bucks on the set and have to have them

As to which sets to buy that is a matter of taste. personally I love the first and second seasons and found the third season .. subpar in comparison. but there are those that love the whole sci fi and movie connected last season.. so its your call.

If you want to get a general feel for it just buy the first season .. see what you think and go for a season 2 set. If you want a lot of characters then Season 2 is the way to go. If you want Sci Fi then Season 3. If you want simple and crazy plots by a evil leader to get energy.. then season 1 all the way :)

But do get them, yes I realize they aren't the most popular thing here on Transfans but they are still fun to me and I guess I like the cheezyness of it if anything. Its just good childish fun to me. Good luck!!

Get the Deluxe box set of season one if you can find it, it's only cosmetic but the packaging is nice.

Wow, I totally was unaware of those. When you say any player, do you mean any region free player, or are the Chinese discs you speak of regionless?

The discs are regionless and I have yet to encounter anybody having any problems at all with them. There are at least three sets to consider:

1) Wooden Boxed Special Edition: This version includes all 98 original G1 episodes (in English) plus Transformers the movie on 25 DVDs. In addition, you also get a collector's box (VERY nice), an audio CD, and either a Ricochet reissue or Robotmasters Convoy figure (depending on the dealer). These are more difficult to find now that they are no longer in print. AnotherHeaven.biz has a set in stock for $300 which is fair, considering what you're getting.

2) Metal Tin Special Edition: This version includes all 98 episodes plus the movie on 15 DVDs, a collectable booklet, a keychain, and a nice looking metal tin to store the DVDs in. These DVDs aren't quite as high quality as the Wooden Boxed Special Edition. This set will usually set you back about 50 bucks after shipping on Ebay.

3) Special Edition: This version does not have a super-nice box but is, in my opinion, the best set you can buy. This is the set that's included as part of the Wooden Box Special Edition. It includes all 98 episodes and the movie on 25 DVDs. The video and sound quality is higher than that of the Rhino DVDs and they can usually be picked up for about $45 on ebay.

All DVDs are region zero and will play in ANY DVD player. They're also all in English. Their menus are in Chinese, however.

I hope this helps.
