Over the last 25 years the Transformers have appeared in media from the exquisite to the scribbled and been licensed to the responsible and the... Pat Lee. Discussion of all the branches of TF media within!

Did they go too far?

Post by spiderfrommars » Thu Jun 23, 2005 1:23 pm

G2:

Bludgeon starts to destroy whole swathes of America.
Megatron starts to join in.
Before long, Jhiaxus has nuked the whole of San Francisco!
(funny that no-one in the Gi-Joe comic batted an eyelid - another alt. universe?)

So, where does one stop? Blow up the entire world?

Do you think it was a neccessary part of building up the sheer epicness of TFs, or was it OTT scripting?

How did you feel when you first read it?

This is why I hate tie-ins.

The moment you try and squeeze GI Joe and Transformers into the same storyline, you have to treat them both as being in the same reality.

Why should GI Joe be concerned about Cobra when the Decepticons are a bigger threat? Why are there no attempts by the Joes to intefere in Megatron/Shockwave/Scorponok's plans?

It becomes daffy and contrived.

Burn the crossover concept!

Exactly, the only good crossover so far must have been "Ancient Relics" IMO

While it may mean absolutely no G.I.Joe related alt. modes as a possiblity, which is a shame because so many of them are just itching to be used because they're awesome, I'd have to agree. Burn the concept.

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Why?

They're an analogue—the Joes in the G2 universe may well have been wiped out for the most part by the time they story's set.

Realistically the 'Cons would have managed to wipe out organic life on Earth if they'd been minded to.

This is about HISS tanks, isn't it?

Sorry SC - just messing. Any HISS tank TF alt artwork on the 'net?

The right sort of crossovers could be fun. Unicron turns up to scoff a planet, only to find Galactus picking continents from his teeth with his little fingernail and asking for the cheque.

Other than what Don just released, no clue. If anyone runs into any I'd be grateful for the head's up. Any Joe alt. mode stuff really. That crap was just meant to transform damnit.

What does a HISS tank actually LOOK like? Perhaps I'll have a stab at a design for you.

I thought Snow Cat was pretty similar to a Joe vehicle.

Note my lack of knowing about this due to not being a GI Joe fan.

Of the same name no less. That's where the newer series can get away with cool stuff like that. Not really tied down to the idea of only what actually exists right now.

A load of various HISS and HISS II images (none really good, and some links may be fubar)...

Ah, now I understand your passion.
The pics aren't too bad, and the design has potential.
I might be at hospital tomorrow and Saturday, but I'll have a bash after the weekend.

I got some promising results from a recent blood test, which means I can drop some of the shedloads of tablets that have made me jittery. I'm having a bit of a biopsy thing taken if they don't screw up the appointment again.
Things are looking up I think, thanks for asking.

In an attempt to steer this thread back on target:

Nuking San Francisco was a great!

This is just the sort of mind-blowing thing that TF needs to do more often. It would have been great to see the Autobots roll up and find SF in smoking ruins. (Ooh! Great fanfic idea!) But anyway, too many Transformers stories just take place in a nondescript desert, and it did a great job of giving the story a stronger sense of immediacy and upping the stakes. It made it feel very real, and was so logical you wonder why Megs never did it before.

I agree.

Fact is, if TFs were real, Earth would be blasted to pieces.

Wasn't it weird how Nebulos got completely battered whilst Earth pretty much came away unscathed in G1?

However, the Gi-Joe/G2 crossover put the two franchises in the same universe again, with Cobra rebuilding G2 Megs. By the end of G2 half the planet's been nuked (I loved all that Jhiaxus "Again! AGAIN!" stuff) but in Gi-Joe's own title it's life as usual.

Well there was some collateral damage, but honestly. The cons did low profile- they had their HQs in deserts, mines, swamps.

And even if Megs could have levelled a city, what for? He needed nothing from the humans...infact, the Cons didn't ever take humanity as a serious threat. Remember how effortlessly the Predacons raider III's HQ.

Which is something I never understood about the Decepticons really. Was the whole alt. mode thing merely them hiding from the Autobots? Because there seemed little point in hiding from humans. Besides, it's not like they were into covert operations when it came to their missions most of the time.

True, there was nothing to be strategically gained by destroying a city in G1. All Megatron needed to do was threaten a few fleshlings, and Optimus would always come running. Destroying San Fran would have only steeled the Autobot's resolve AND exposed themselves as the true "evil-doers" to the humans.
