Can you think of a TF story you really like but that has a really crap element in it? Did it spoil it for you? Do you love it in spite of it? What would you have changed?

Space Pirates.
Love the action sequences - Metroplex! - adore the sections set on Cybertron with Soundwave and the lads and then Magnus showing up, Wreck-Gar is actually funny, hell I almost like Hot Rod in this story....but the Quintessons, sorry, they're just naff, Wheelie is pants and there are some weird plot-elements that are glossed over but still stand out...like defeating the bad guy with a ventriloquist act. Arcee is written especially badly, I thought.
Good bits outweigh the bad, tho.

I was reading the one where the Autobots battle Unicron, and I think it's a really incredible comic. Almost every page has been frozen in my mind since the first time I read it, because when I was a little kid the whole comic just scared the crap out of me.
The only thing I really hate about this issue is Prime's Nebulan component. We see Prime in pain, doubled over, and finally releasing HiQ from his chest. The problem is that the image is dark and very far away, and we don't see him clearly. Later HiQ begs to go with Prime, but he is off-panel and we only see his word balloon.
I think it's just really miserable writing to introduce a character in an issue but have him be off-panel for the entire time. I was scratching my head trying to figure out who the @*$! Prime was talking to. While sometimes an unseen speaker can be effective as a narrator or a mysterious "Deep Throat" type, in this case it just looked like they were too lazy to draw a panel showing that HiQ was the one speaking. It's very confusing and, IMO, criminally bad writing.

I think I'd blame the artist for not depicting Hi-Q in that issue. I have to say, at the time I felt it was a bit off that we only got a speech balloon coming from off-camera. (HiQ had been featured in the comic several times previously however). One thing I didn't quite twig in the lead up to the Unicron War when I read it the first time was that Prime's pangs of pain were Powermaster-related - I thought the Matrix had more to do with it (even though he didn't have it).
Re: Space Pirates, I find the first half pretty dull. But once Roddy arrives on Earth and Soundwave leads on Cybertron, its golden.
