Remembering Armada/Energon

Post by bobaprime85 » Sun May 15, 2005 6:38 pm

As I was skimming through some of my Armada issues recently, I found myself wondering if anyone will give the series a second thought ten years or so down the line. It was certainly an interesting concept that might have produced some very memorable stories had it lived long enough to find its niche. Furman created an interesting dynamic (or was about to) when he came on the title, but the interruptions from Hasbro really prevented any kind of ongoing flow to the stories and it feels a bit unjust that it seems most people will remember the cartoons rather than either the Armada or Energon comic.

Perhaps we need to revive Energon and Armada as fanfics. Dump everything except the toys and the general concepts (Minicons: powerful. Powerlinx: sort of okay) and do a good solid recreation of the series (Ironhide not whiney. Kicker not whiney - or even better, not at all. Prime not a butthead. Unified function of Energon Stars etc). Show how it all should have been done across the board in the first place.

I think the comic was in general well received and won't need re-evaluation. More like another missed opportunity... again.

At several points I thought it was the best thing DW were doing. At other points, admittedly, it was last on the pile to read (early Energon mainly).

I was surprised that DW took time out to tell a one-off character story. Pity it was about Ironhide. Although he wasn't as whiney as in the cartoon.

The Ironhide story wasn't half-bad, really. Plus, it signalled the upward trend that cumulated in the surprisingly good 'multiplicity'. As I have no knowledge of the cartoon, I can't compare, but I thought it gave the young'un something of an actual personality.

And Tidal Wave was actually portrayed as intelligent - unlike all the TF show's temptations to make the bigger characters dumb or slow-witted.

Heh. One of my fondest wishes is to see an Omega Supreme-type character suddenly start talking about the nature of life, the universe and everything, totally taking the other characters by surprise.

He was kinda 'intelligent' in that cartoon episode about the Constructicons.

Yeah, that was one of my favorite episodes.

Perhaps Computron, if he had ever been featured.

Compy was the smartest of the smart. He was in season 3 of the cartoon though. He made Grimlock dumb again.
