Just a thought, but even if they DID use the reels to in someway influence the movie, all it would be is a complete retread of what has gone before. Not that that's a totally bad thing, but where's the special 'thing' that will make this story new to older fans? I mean, if this dumb competition had been run for the original TF movie, there would have probably never been Unicron - which was almost a completely new slant on the TF universe (even being accepted by comic fans as canon).
You can't just remake the first 3 eps of the G1 cartoon in live-action form - it needs that 'thing' to surprise even us long-term fans. And I don't think that a reel of what has gone before will be much help inspiring that. At the very least there should be more comic stuff than cartoon stuff - I should imagine most EVERYONE has seen all the G1 cartoons, but even I haven't read all the comics that are out there. Something in there should surprise me. I just don't want to go to the film when I can pretty much guess the ending because it's all been done before.

Seriously though, I believe you were spot on with the phrase, "all it would be is a complete retread of what has gone before," as it's likely to be just that. The "special thing" that's likely to be the "draw" is the fact this is a major motion picture done in cg. Maybe that's not good enough for us, but I'd imagine the mainstream film industry considers it more than enough. It's part of the "coming back with 80's stuff" trend. It's mostly about repackaging. That's one of the literally hundreds of reasons that this whole toon-influence thing going on is disheartening. I'd love a new plot device, er, concept that would blow everyone away like Unicron did to the continuities once upon a time. But that's too risqué for something like this quite frankly, at least from the money-grubbers that will ensure they are able to achieve top dollar in their pocket. They'll play it safe and rehash the cartoon. Plain and simple. New elements? Megatron's and Soundwave's new alt modes. You're absolutely correct in your statement that a reel of what has gone before won't be much help inspiring a new take. Which makes this further craptastic. The comment of, "at the very least there should be more comic stuff than cartoon stuff," is the main reason comic lovers are pissed and less than hopeful of the result that will be all this. And, and I had to stop as I was feeling sickly and quite sure I was about to have a heart attack, as I was just attempting to short-circuit my eyes and read the posts at Don's board I became even further enraged. Cartoon lovers spouting the Marvel run wasn't top-notch throughout (which is a valid statement, but look at what they prefer FFS. ...and opens a discusion forum on the whole thing.

As a result a mass of self important cock monkeys who think that:

a) their opinion is the shizzle dizzle

b) they are just the kind of person a hollywod producer will listen to

and/or

c) posting 24/7 is the mark of a great human being (when do these f***s buy milk?)

Consquentially a great deal of TF fandom think;
