If there hadn't been a 'Convoy' toy to become the Optimus we all know and love, which of the other initial Autobot toys would have been the most likely alternative candidate? Prime was probably the boss toy 'cos he was the biggest one in the first toy series, but all the others were of a similar size.
The same with the Decepticons: who would have been 'top bot' if the Megs toy hadn't got there first? Soundwave perhaps? How would that had changed the storylines?

Soundwave was originally slated to be Decepticon leader IIRC, that's why the insignia resembles him so. There's a piece of art of Optimus and Soundwave fighting in space, where Soundwave is blasing Optimus in the side of the face with his shoulder cannon and Laserbeak is swooping around to attack, which I think originated from the Soundwave-as-leader stage.
I guess with Soundwave as leader the Cassetticons would assume a greater importance as well, maybe there would even be a bit of jet/cassette rivalry.
Blaster (from the Microman/Diaclone line-up) would probably be the best 'bot leader, if we discount Ultra Magnus, but who knows what that would have turned out like...

I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

True on the Soundwave stuff (although I did suggest that). Never looked at that Prime/Soundwave picture like that - but I DID once wonder why it wasn't Megs and Prime.
Inferno and Blaster are good suggestions (a Blaster/Soundwave as leaders would have been cool - perhaps with them as estranged brothers as a backstory) - but they weren't in the first wave of releases (in the UK at least). I mean out of Jazz, Sideswipe, wheeljack etc.
Interesting that you picked the red 'bots as the new Autobot leader though...

Didn't know that about Jap Soundwave as leader.
True, guns are good (for toys). But I'd have preferred that they'd used the 'Browning' gun figure as Megatron because he was a better-looking robot mode. That said, there wouldn't have been the lovely fusion cannon idea. And Browning wasn't in the UK releases - or US I believe. Pity.
Okay, we all love Soundwave as Decept boss because he was a big mold and wasn't repainted. That doesn't really leave any other choices does it? I think there were only the seekers and the cassettes left in the first series of Decept releases.
Let's say Soundwave doesn't exist either - who else would you choose?
And let's not forget those Autobot guys - what about their new boss?
Also, to make things a bit more interesting, which of the Diaclone or Microman/changer (whatever it was) that were NEVER TFs should have been? I've already put up my vote for Browning (but renamed Megatron of course).

I knew that, but I meant in the UK (don't know about the US - never saw one there though). He's always been blue/silver here. Also, when I mentioned repaints, I meant in relation to the seekers and cassettes - I screwed up my sentences and it came out as being Soundwave.Optimus Prime Rib wrote:There is a black version and a blue version.Autobloke wrote: Okay, we all love Soundwave as Decept boss because he was a big mold and wasn't repainted. .
Good eye though.
But if Soundwave DIDN'T exist in ANY colour...
