Remember, Spike's onyl commitment to the Autobots was to find and save Buster, that's the entire reason he became a Headmaster.
It's rare to find someone who joins up with a cause for their own agenda, and once they finish that agenda they simply leave as easy as that. It was a very understandable and human thing to do, not everyone can become pure-hearted saviors of the Universe. Not his fault they couldn't find anyone else to merge Max with.

As we're currently on the subject of Headmasters, what happened to the original heads? Are they still on Nebulos? Sometimes it's explained that the original heads were rebuilt to make the exosuits (as in the cartoon), but the bonded Nebs were happily chatting to the heads in the comic in one scene. Did they take the heads when they left, and if so, where'd they go? If they did, why not reinstall the heads when they left the planet?
And, getting back to the main topic, how does all this jibe with the concept of sparks? If a Headmaster Nebulan dies, is the bonded TF affected sparkwise?
And yes, Spike was such a dick in his partnership with Fort Max. If a TF can change his HM partner (Galen to Spike), why didn't FM just find a more willing partner to replace the selfish tit?

I'm not sure if 'ignoring' something and going with a whole new explanation is retconning it as I didn't see any subsequent metion of the heads as part of the suit. Then again, hindsight is a bugger if a cartoon/comic story is already out in the public when a better solution comes along - we fans just moan about the inconsistencies regardless. Not complaining though - I just missed out on the revised suit/head explanation thing somewhere along the line. Works much better the new way.
So, where ARE the HM TF sparks then? In the suits? Or, if BW and BM is to be believed, in the chest - which means that a HM could have his Neb partner blown up and still survive the unfortunate matter.
Hmm... applying spark rules to old TF stories is kinda complicated after a while, isn't it?

Anyways, about them not using Fort Max again after Underbase, I don't think it was JUST because Spike left. I think Fort Max's body itself was still badly damaged from fighting Starscream, remember that the Headmasters and Powermasters Nebulan and Human components survived, but their robots boides were all still wrecks. It wasn't until later on in the sereis most were revived. Since Fort Max's body was bigger and more powerful, and it took a long time to repair less fatal damage (he was still weak for a while after his fight with Shockwave) so maybe they just didn't have the time to fix him, which is why he was such a wreck in "The Last Autobot" and the beginning of G2.
