Baseless Speculation? Dreamwave.

Over the last 25 years the Transformers have appeared in media from the exquisite to the scribbled and been licensed to the responsible and the... Pat Lee. Discussion of all the branches of TF media within!

It's my considered opinion that many of the comic shops I've frequented have only themselves to blame for any financial troubles. True, the fact that I can lay hands on trade paperbacks more easily and cheaply and without needing to find a comic shop... isn't entirely their fault. The fact that so many provide **** service is.

True. I personally save myself the hassle of being talked to like a c*** these days by getting it all by mail elsewhere.

Yeah, absolutely top bloke. Just a shame I haven't wanted any DW comics in quite a while.

And now I'm doubly annoyed at DW folding, since it's retailers who'll have to deal with the fallout of series being cancelled mid-subscription...

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!

Dreamwave has sent an official statement, they have gone out of business.

http://seibertron.com/news/view.php?id=4495

Well, I hope all the Dreamwave-haters are just happy. Cause now we'll without almost any doubt be without TF-comics for another ten years. My sweet sweet Armada-verse  ...DAMN YOU ALL!

By the Way:  Anybody that mentions the name Devils Due and TF-comics will get their head-modules disassembled. And it will be with a concoction of Optimus Prime Ribs and Aaron Hongs old tool-kits..

Seriously,I'mtruly sad. Who knows how long before we get another TF comic? :(

I prefer the term "lurker" as I have been on the board for over a year now.
So your saying that you rather have absolutely no TF comics than have one come out from Devils Due? Sounds a little over the top. I mean its possible for DD to simply take over the license and allow the same creative teams to continue to make the TF comics. Right? In a perfect world of course.

In a perfect world, possibly. They could certainly hire the same talent. I'm not so sure about the storyline, though.

Based on what I've seen so far, I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea of DD having the rights. Although, to be fair, because GI Joe has been theirs, the crossovers have more to do with them than TF, so obviously that would change if they got the rights.

I don't know about you guys, but I was pleasently surprised by Chris Sacchirini's run on G1. He managed not to screw up anything!

Indeed I am, Emvee.

So how long do you think we're looking until a TF comic is on the shelves? It IS 2005, and they DO have a movie coming out too, ya know.

It was his best work evah!

I particularly liked how he did indeed focus on a very small cast of characters....

How, do you imagine, does this Dreamwave situation affect Pat Lee's employability?

.
.
.
.
.
p.s.

Good things to come out of this situation:
------------------------------------------------
1. No obvious Unicron/Roddy/Galvatron retread. (DARE I SPEAK TOO SOON?)
2. No cringeworthy debut of gendered robots. (DARE I SPEAK TOO SOON?)

Bad things to come out of the situation:
----------------------------------------------
1. Ripped off workers.
2. TWW:AoW in limbo.

That statement's hilarious. Even in death the ol' spin doctors are working overtime.

Oh, and, "although this is the end of Dreamwave as a comics publisher, I [Pat Lee] will still be penciling a number of new exciting projects in conjunction with other studios in the upcoming years." Admit it, thats funny. Rub salt in the wounds why don't you.

I'm slightly irritated that several story strands will never see the light of day, and that Furman and Sarracini were paraded around to do rather meaningless interviews, and that DW (and certain members of the community) have been in denial for what seems like ever.

But other than that, I'm neither happy or sad. I feel ok. When G1 ended I could have cried, when G2 ended I could've hit someone. But this... this is just typical if anything.

Is the mentioned "a relentlessly shrinking comic book market" really a relentlessly shrinking comic book market, or is it just said as an excuse of why their past titles repackaged with new covers (sometimes of folks not even in the issue)/crap content/and cartoon plots ****verted to paper didn't sell?

Really, I'm asking. :?:

Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Gotta love the note Newsarama attaches to it at the end:
Newsarama Note: Dreamwave's claim of being the "Canadian independent comics publisher" is somewhat misleading, as Arcana, UDON, and the recently launched Speakeasy are all headquartered in Canada.

Also, I'm probably going to flip out on the next person who tells me this is a really sad day for comics becuase of this.
Yes, it is a sad day for comics.
Because Will Eisner died this morning, not because an indie comics company closed it's doors.

The comics market has been in a downturn for over a decade. Readership numbers go down every year.
Wait, let me clarify; the Western mainstream comics market.

I think I'm correct in saying that Indies (apart from spectacular failures like Crossgen) and most notably Manga publishers have all increased their share in the market; Manga has expanded into it's own litle phenomenon and the Big Two are chasing after it with their pants around their ankles. The notional runners-up like Dark Horse and Image aren't doing too hot either; compare that to up-and-comers like UDON and Tokyopop.

The poor show of DW this last year, when s lot of other indies and manga-style publishers have been doing OK to really, really good has been quite noticable, IMHO.

However, even the mainstream Western comics are largely feeling reasonably happy at the mo', because the drop has almost stabilsed and they think they can use lots of trick like 'Newing', 'All-Starring', Manga, digests and the bookstore market to turn the tide.
With a good chance of succes, IMHO.

Ah sh1t. I loved Will Eisner's comics. That guy deserved all the plaudits he got. I recommend "Minor Miracles" as a good starting point.
