Transformers: The Movie

Post by bobaprime85 » Tue Dec 07, 2004 1:10 am

Given that DW is setting things up to do their own version of the movie in 2005, I thought now would be a good time to look over the movie and, once and for all, settle the likes, dislikes, and weirdness that permeate the animated endeavour. Stuff like: how good was the Prime/Megatron fight scene? Was the animation to your liking? Why in the name of God were we subjected to Daniel, and.... does anyone actually like 'the touch'?

I like the Touch. A lot. Play it while I play StarCraft and the like. And the Optimus Megatron was tremenduously good, it may in fact be the best fight-scene in all of Transformers. :)

It's fun provided I don't try and think too critically whilst watching.

It's miles ahead of the cartoon at any rate. (Actual deaths for starters. This is a war after all...)

Soundtrack's fun.

I loved the Movie when I was about nine. Then as I grew up I realised that all the stuff that I didn't understand back then wasn't due to me being too young to "get it" but was in fact due to it making absolutely no sense.

I'd go through why I regard it as a steaming pile of Tottenham, but that would involve devoting time/effort to a feature that I have little but apathy toward. Okay, searing contempt, but not enough to justify analysing its plot in favour of earning my keep at work...
Grrr. Argh.

It starts better than it ends - the fight for Autobot city is, like all fights, cooooool. Prime vs Megs is gerat until Hot-knob ruins it.

After that i still like it tbh, but the following, more than anything else, makes me ever so slightly want to kill things:

Stupid Dinobots. Nnn.

And on that note the final word must of course go to Mr Lock:

Option #2.
I really dislike 'The Touch', but the rest of the tunes are indeed good fun.
I really enjoy the film up until Starscream's coronation...after that my attention wanders and not even Slag's "excuse me!" can get me back into the spirit of things...for me, the errors start to seriously impinge upon the plot and the irritation factors (Quintessons, Wheelie, Hot Rod, Daniel, stupid Dinobots) ramp up to high levels very quickly indeed.

The Autobot City battle is basically what I watch it for. And that bit with the Decepticons at the start.
And yes, just how good is that bit when Prime massacres half of the Decepticons?

The movie's good fun. Better than it had any right to be.

Can't think of a better toyline based film to be honest.

Turtles movie had fewer animation errors. :o

Toy Story!

Okay, fair point.

Phantom Menace? That was a toyline movie...
KingMob wrote:And yes, just how good is that bit when Prime massacres half of the Decepticons?
Not very, considering that the Decepticons don't sustain a single fatality over the entire course of the battle.

Well, maybe Reflector...

Fabby massacre, eh? ;)

Used 'massacre' to convey the sense of enthusiastic visercal enjoyment I derive from the scene, not in the sense of Prime's factual accomplishment. I was half expecting someone to say, 'he only hits {insert whatever number it is here} Decepticons, not "half" of them, which would in fact be {insert whatever number it is here}'.
Like you said, hardly anything in the movie makes sense, so I don't tend to apply logic or even a sense of self-accuracy to it. Prime massacres the **** out of the Decepticons in that scene to me, and I love it. Love it I tells ya! :D

The nostalgia and overall feeling makes it a great movie.

But if you watch it as a movie, if you get what I mean, it sucks. :D

not better tho is it?

I love the touch. If my ipod had not died inexplicably this morning i would listen to it now.

I too think Prime kicking the crap out of every available Decep is bloody great...

...altho it leads to the awkward question why didn't he just do that in Arrival From Cybertron? sigh. stoopid toon.

Not quite the same. Yes, merchandise is key, but Star Wars came first, the toys second.

Rubbish!

Transformers: The Movie was designed to flog Hasbro's new batch of Transformers toys.

Phantom Menace was designed to flog Jar Jar Binks figures.

I see no difference.

Unless you're going to claim that Episode I was produced with artistic integrity as the main priority? ;)

You mean that people were supposed to whip and beat their Jar Jar and Transformer toys into submission?

Wait..... probably using a different definition of 'flog' here.

Anyway, the TF movie never fails to entertain me. The animation is half decent, and it provided some of the more memorable bits of TF lore. The battle for Autobot City is just classic, and I actually like the way main characters like Wheeljack were killed off screen - in war, there's too much going on to notice the possibly 'heroic' death of someone you know. It also marks cartoon Megatron's only bit of reasonably rational thinking, and Frank Welker was pitch perfect throughout. Of course, the Prime/Megatron grudge match remains the high point of the film for me, and yes I do enjoy listening to 'The Touch' in the background. However, you know that things are going to go downhill once Hot Sod interferes in the fight, thereby certifying his place on my hit list.

The first half of the film was definitely something any TransFan could point to as a source of pride, but after Starscream gets killed (yay!) and the moons eaten, things just go downhill. For a brief moment, it looked like the Dinobots fighting the Sharkticons would redeem things, but then we had "Me Grimlock say execute them!" - what? Not to mention the introduction of .....Wheelie and the continuing screen time given to Daniel (why the hell was there in the first place?!). Of course, the scene that sends me into a blind rage to this day is the 'dancing' with the Junkions. Bah!

To sum up: First half = :)

Second half = :eyebrow:

yeah I love the movie!

FIrst half is great, in places its brutal, i love showing TF virgins the movie, they get shocked when they see flames pouring from Prowls mouth!

Optimus looks cool init aswell, nice and angular - and the touch scene is fantastic.

loverly animation at this point (except for when OP raises his gun?)

then apart from a few cool Galvatron moments, the 2nd half is a bit meh...

still I always enjoy it - good for a laugh, my Video gems VHS still works, and has lovingly been replaced by the DVD.

Unicron attacking Cybertron is always good for a laugh. The second half flags, with danking Junkions and the like, but picks up towards the end. The end itself...meh...

What, you aren't a fan of approximately 7 or so characters announcing the end of planetwide civil war that has dragged on for millenia even though no actual victory was achieved?

Rodimus = idiotic gimp.

 You know, I've always wondered how long they shouted that over and over until they realized that they were in deep into Decepticon territory and Decep reinforcements were probably on their way.

"Let this mark the end of the civil war!'

"Erm, then why are Decepticon seekers headed our way?"

"Oh....erm..... Matrix time! Er....that thing doesn't need to recharge, does it?"

I love certain parts of the movie, but overall...it just doesn't make much sense. Honestly, I'd just as soon watch MTMTE or FFOD if I was to spend an hour-plus watching the cartoon.

The shuttle scene, Autobot city battle, Megatron's reformatting, Starcream's coronation, and the Hot Rod/Galvy battle still manage to dazzle me (after well over 100 viewings, considering how often I used that tape when I was a kid), but other parts (especially the Quints) provoke a 'WTF?' nowadays.

I still enjoy it, but I have to turn my brain off to do so.

I like to watch it once in a while, even in its second part there are bits I like (some funny lines, mostly by Hot Rod) and Hot Rod/Rodimus vs. Galvatron is very cool.

I love the soundtrack. I want to get some more CDs from Stan Bush, Kick Axe and those others performers.

But, I enjoy 'G.I.Joe: The Movie' more.

D'ya know what I'd like? The original movie redone with today's CGI. Keep the original story, music and dialogue tracks, but replace the cell animation with lovely photoreal computer graphics. Mmm...
If only I had the money to do it. Or a REALLY powerful PC. Perhaps all we Transfans should get together and do it ourselves. At least someone should try reanimating a short scene in CGI to see how it would turn out.
