Not read your link yet sfm, but I will after I post this.
BW's Optimus had more proper character than any of the other ones (although he lost it a bit in BM. Being a slight fanatical nutter could be a character trait though I suppose).
The fact that Primal was a scientist and initially reluctant warrior (for about two seconds) could have been tech specs fluff, but the fact that they carried the scientist aspect of him through the series to where it actually helps him at times (Gorilla Warfare) surely makes him more of a proper being.

At least his crew made sense for the mission (except maybe Rattrap), and they had a whole stack of protos to pick from if something specific came up.

Just read the reveiw of Distant Thunder and yes, it does sound like a Star Trek episode, doesn't it? Prime still seems a bit 'feh: heroguy' to me.

Not disputing that. Just felt that Prime was kinda... Prime (in as such as he was the usual 'hero guy'). As a story, I enjoyed Distant Thunder very much - I jut felt that it didn't shed any more light on Prime as a person beyond being your typical goodguy leader. Any deviations into darker or slightly less 'Prime' territory were really only in that story, and were quickly forgotton for the blander Prime in subsequent tales.

Once again, it all boils down to what someone defines as 'character'. Perhaps just being 'Optimus Prime' is character enough.

Really? In a single issue Prime is selfish, selfless, hypocritical, responsible, hot headed, strong, fearless, scared, suicidal, enraged and yes 'heroic.' Few sides to him there.

Well immediately after that tale Budiansky topped the character. Nothing was 'quickly forgotten', it was all pretty much unavoidable. Things had been going in a very interesting direction with the character till then.

In the first Prime story Furman had a hand in after that (he did the Plot for the Xmas 88 story) Prime was wondering if Earth was worth saving at all! And from the get go on his work for the US title, Furman gave Prime new nuances: flying into a violent rage against the Air Strike Patrol, having a near mental breakdown after Ratchet's death and so on.

Hmm.. you make good points. I haven't read most of my back issues for a few years, so I'm going from memory on most of this. Perhaps my views on Prime have been poisoned by the godawful cartoon versions of him. I just feel that if he WASN'T the leader then he'd be a bit dull. Lucky for him that no-one (except Grimlock) wants to replace him. That said, when Prime isn't around, the Autos make some DUMB decisions.
