"Lost the World Cup"? There's a difference between losing a tournament and not winning it. I don't think anybody regards failing to win the thing as "losing it".

And no. In 1998 we played like gods, until David Beckham decided to be a petulant brat and we ultimately went out on pens. As such, Becks got the flack... maybe fairly, maybe not. Few folks blamed Hoddle.
Grrr. Argh.

Losing to Romania and finishing second in the group isn't god like :o (I can't remember how you played though, if you had like a gazillion goal scoring chances or something. But when you read the results it doesn't seem very god like).

Hoddle and Keegan's tactics weren't exactly lauded, no.

i think the key point is Terry made us play as a team, not just a bunch of talented folk (and Sol Campbell) who heppen to be on the same pitch.

Oh, and we had Gazza.

We ripped Argentina to shreds. Shreds, I say! Shreds! Until Beckham got himself sent off. So it's all his fault, you see? All his.

Never mind the fact that we did bugger all after that red, and that we bottled a penalty shoot-out again. It was all Beckham. :o

I was listening to him the other day, the way he describes his team setup was about getting the best from each players ablity - Sven seems to get his best players and try to squeeze them into roles.

Hehe, it's like when little kids are playing footy and the dude that's supposed to play the central defender says "I am Ronaldinho!"

totally agree, with Sven we would never have won in '66 cos, for example, he would never have picked Nobby Styles because there were better players.

But syles was the best player for that position.

I get teh feeling wih Sven that if the best 11 players in the country were keepers we would have em all on the pitch at once.

The only time he ever does seem to think like thisis with hargreaves (regeardles of wthere he or Carrick is better, i don't think there is that much in it to be honest) but he does it with no real conviction.

In comparison I can say that Marcus Allbäck played in Aston Villa (and failed horribly), he also played in the german Bundesliga (failed) and he is now playing in the danish league.

On the bench we had Marcus Rosenberg who has played really well at Ajax, scoring a bunch of goals (hopefully a up-and-coming-star for the Swedish national team.).

At the beginning of the game we had Mattias Jonsson in right midfield. He plays in the (super crappy) swedish league.
On the bench we had Christian Wilhelmsson - who plays in the belgian league (and there's always rumours of him going to Serie A).

Lagerbäck, our coach, picked the team that he thought was best against England. Not the players who are the best (allthough Wilhelmsson and Jonsson are two different players).

I gotta admit though - a couple of years ago, when Lagerbäck and Söderberg refused to play Zlatan Ibrahimovic and instead had Allbäck in the starting eleven, I was ******* frustrated ;)

This isn't me saying "haha our coach is the roxxors" or something like that.

How do you guys think your new coach will work out? HAsn't he been working with Sven the last couple of yearS+

That's a bit strong. I still question the ref's decision there, Beckham was face down on the floor with his legs flailing behind him...it hardly smacked of a deliberate attack.

England under Hoddle were a very attractive football side.

They got mugged by Romania in a one sided game & Hoddle is also a bit of a plum in the man management stakes from what I hear.

But as far as actually being able to play football, under Hoddle, England were very attractive and very dangerous. We got some pretty good results under him - if he had the calibre of players Sven has now... well, I think Hoddle's team would have absolutely wrecked Paraguay and Trinadad and probably outclassed Sweden.

Our last victories against France and Italy were under Hoddle. Outplayed Argentina despite having 10 men for over an hour. Yeah, I think under Hoddle was the last time watching England was fun.

He also picked a lot of Spurs men ;)

Hoddle was the last proper quality manager that Saints had (ok, we did well under Strachan, but it all started to fall apart whilst WGS was still there). We played tight, tactically sound football and he wasn't afraid to drop players if they were a bit rubbish.

But again, by all accounts he was rubbish on a man management level. Maybe that's the trade off, though? The players love Sven, but he's tactically gutless.

Petulance + Gamemanship x **** ref = red card!

Glenn was very close to being a success at Tottenham. The problem I heard He had at Spurs was David Pleat.

Pleat's a funny one. That bloke seems to talk sense on TV and always seems to rate the really good up nd coming players and knows a hell of lot about the up and comings and the game in general - even if he does make the odd commentary guff up...

So how come he's always been dead ***** at managing teams? I reckon he is a right **** behind the scenes.

What the [composite word including 'f*ck']? THe English FA has to pay Owens salaray until he's recovered from the injury?

This kind of **** will ruin international footy. Sweden would never be able to pay that kind of money = no Ljungberg, no Ibrahimovic, no Larsson. Probably no Rosenberg or Wilhelmsson as well.

Why can't the rich ass mofo players pay their own medical bill when this happens whilst they are away on internationals?

Oh well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BK4ixm79 ... =blackburn

I woke up today - read Englads tactical titty in the Times WC section (very informative) and realised we have no chance of winning the world cup.

Let the American whining and pouting begin.

Honestly, everyone here is like, "Well, we don't give a piss about soccer, and all our best atheletes are playing football and basketball, but gosh darnit, our scrubs should be able to beat the world's best anyway just because we're AMERICA!"

It's disgusting.

Sure, we could have beat Ghana and got out of the group, but then what?

Hats off to Ghana and Italy and all the best of luck.

Saw this piece about Spurs signing Zokora on one of my secret ITK websites earlier:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I was in Munich today , there to watch the Cote D'ivoire - Serbia & Montenegro. My dads girlfriend works for the city of Munich so she got tickets for every game in Munich. She knows everybody and she was invited to the 80th birthday celebrations for the queen in the Hilton hotel. We arrived and I saw loads of people in CIV colours. I asked if they were gonna come down to the lobby and some Ivorian told me that they would be there. So I went to this ceremony and got out as quickly as possible ... but it was too late. The bus had already gone. So we went home and then later on we went to the match. After the match we all went straight to the Hilton hotel and we waited for the CIV players to come. We waited for about 45 min. and then they came. I tried to get close but it didn't work. I already wanted to go home but then my dad's girlfriend told me to ask if the players were gonna come down again. I did just that and the guy told they'd be there in 15 min. I was standing at some barrier and then some guy saw my England flag with Tottenham on it. He gave me a sign to hold it up and they took a photo. I went back to my dad and I told him what had happened. I walked past the guy that took the photo and his face looked familiar. I ran straight back to my father and told him to look at that guy. It was Comolli !!! So we walked up to him and greeted him and he was very very friendly , he told us that he sent my photo to Mr. Levy (!!!!). Then my dad said great game , another awesome performance and then Comolli said:"It's a done deal" (ZOKORA). He introduced us to Zokora's agent , his wife & to Spurs' chief scout. Of course I took a picture of Comolli , me & my flag. After that I went to this area where the players were supposed to be. I tried to get into this sort of V.I.P. area but they didn't let me in (in fact they almost threw me out!). So I went back and told Comolli to give Zokora my flag but he told me to give it to him after a Spurs game. But then Zokora's agent said that Zokora'd be there in a minute and he really came. I gave him the flag and told him:" Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur" and he was totally shocked. He laughed and didn't say a word. We took some photos and I gave him my flag as present. I am the first Spurs fan he met , I bet he didn't expect to meet a Spurs fan this early. This was probably the best day in my young life , btw my dad is "olderyid".

I'll post the pics later today (it's 2:15 a.m. german time)"

---------------------------------------------------------------------

oh...

Then the bloke whacked this beauty up:

Footy has grown stale with its current crop of human players. I submit that the US sign the greatest unrecognized talent in the whole of potential existance. Here is amateur videotape of his offensive skills.

Sanity is restored to the world as USA crash out - One day tho, they will realise that the biggest sporting event on earth is the WC and football itself...then we will all be ******.

untill then, its good for the rest of us.

Trust me, you'll sooner see George Bush invest $50 billion dollars into teaching the world about non violent resistance and the wonders of electric cars befor you see Americans be more excited about a game that ends 2-0 or, god forbid in a tie, than basketball games with hundreds of points and football games, with violence, violence, violence.

Graham Poll - what a thick ****!

I want Leonardo to be on MOTD next year, he is aces :(

So we lose Croatia and Czech Republic - Croatia are drifting as a world team at the moment...

No real world class players like when they had Boban and Suker and to a lesser degree Jarni and Prosinecki.

The Czechs though... man, surprising - but to be honest I think they played pretty gash and even when they tonked the states it was largely due to some hefty individuality.

Well done Angola!
