Short answer: Furman Grimlock was brilliant, Cartoon Grimlock was cringeworthy, Budiansky's take started OK, but degenerated, Dreamwave Grimlock fortunately tended towards Furman's version.

He was a great character, still I just wouldn't like him as a person... his stubbornness lead to many chatastrophes (almost executes Blaster, ruins the Con alliance by throwing a glass at Fangry (never do that at home! :D ), gets all the Autobots killed on KLo, leads a catastrophal attack against Jhiaxus, getting Red Alert and Mirage killed.)

Of course he saved the day very often, still every time he came up with something I was thinking Prowl's advice was better...

The Grimster is just a classic TF character, regardless of whether he actually HAD any character at times. Definitely preferred the comic version - even the DW version - to the cartoon one. Pity we didn't get to see the Energon version in comic or cartoon form - it would have been nice to see him stomping on the TV screen again.

BAD A$$ (Someone had to say it)

He's big, he's mean, he's a T-Rex!! :!:

I like Grimlock, he just doesn't give a flying @#?$, just thinks (rightfully so) I'm nails and you're gonna get it. He kicked Unicron's butt! He (and the other Dinobot's) attacked Galvatron, got their butt's kicked but they had a go. The Dinobots won't even back down from Devastator.

The guy is a war machine!

OK his cartoon persona was dumb, but he was KING! Megs was scared of him, respect. Prime got it too!

He's traded sides, tricked by Megs in the cartoon, of his own accord in DW. Not read enough Marvel to know for sure, although I do remember him deserting the bots. This just shouts at me he does what he wants when he wants to.

I think he's the perfect leader for the Dinobots, fearless and leads by example with an Iron fist (or whatever that metal is they're made of.)

I liked the WW Grimlock to, he was coming along nicely.

....in lieu of typing out a massive screed about my favourite Transformer, I'll just settle for now by saying that I *heart* Grimlock. And if you want a reason it's because pretty much everything about him and the way he is portrayed makes me smile. Thankyou to Mr.Bob and Mr. Furman and everybody else involved.

Oh, except cartoon season 3 Grimmers and those responsible, what little I've seen of him is pretty vile.

Yeah, and don't forget, Grimmy was cartoon dumb in the Japanese Headmasters too, not that he appeared often... He and the dinos were the comic element, later replaced by Doublecross.

I suspect our Bob extrapolated it from Grimmy's line in the movie: "Me king!"
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Strange it was just...lying around in the Ark. You gotta ask why Optimus of all Autobots, thought it necessary to take a VVH on a mission to clear asteroids.

Err... maybe he was just in a hurry to clear the asteroids and didn't check what was on the ship before he blasted off?

After all, what was a Guardian doing on board?

That's TWO guardians, one of which was a model that was never actually used because it was too unstable...

Grimlock.

The most overexposed, overrated character in TF comic history.

I used to like Grimster, but really, to much of a good thing, yada, yada.

Well, maybe Grimlock had Wheeljack build the VVH all especial-like, um, or maybe there's an untold Dr Who story about the Tissue Compression Thingy having it's polarities reversed and accidentally enlarging the ickle VVH reserved for the Dumb Stubbies, and, uh, maybe the other Guardian was listed as, um, Ship's Barber, and um...Shockwave and Soundwave didn't fancy messing about with an unstable hairdresser, unlike that flash git Hot Rod...and, um...

oh.

I'll get me coat.

I loved the comic Grimlock, and the cartoon one to an extent. He was a no nonsense, gung ho type of leader.

I'd love to see him in the movie, but not as one of the "stupid Dino-bot" ones.....

I think Furman did a great job in War Within - distilled all the best/most interesting parts of Grimlock's miltiple G1 personalities into one believable character. The ego and attitude was there (dare I say the obvious leadership ability, which was often not apparent with Marvel), but you would never have seen WW Grimlock wearing a crown!

i think they handled his char wrong they should have made him smarter(he does rank as a 7) but niether the show or the comic did that as for being a good leader he was a good leader for the dinobots but not for the autobots(ill never understand why thje comic picked him as successor to optimus shockwave was a good leader why do the autoibots get stuck with "grimmy"?) and while we are on the subject of the dinobots why did wheeljack make them so stupid the shows writers obviously were thinking "dinosaurs have small brains so we will give them small ones too") but what was wheeljacks logic?(and is it my imagination or is wheeljack bolegged? lol!!) was it to focus thier energy on strenth? or what?

Wheeljack didnt create the Dinobots in the comic. They were an assault team on board the Ark that were reactivated millions of years before the others when Shockwave came to earth to investigate the Arks demise.

Correct?

They met at some point after the war broke. For example, they stole and hid those Decepticon shuttles as told in Savage Circle.

We also know that Dinobots weren't always team and served in different squads. Swoop and Divebomb's rivalry on Cybertron seemed to be something others weren't awared of until Grudge Match (or in case of Grimlock, soon after Prime's death).

On the topic of Grimlock, his development during the course of entire Marvel series (both original and Generation 2) I consider among the best. He started as a bully, who wasn't concerned about other Autobots and weaker lifeforms, he loathed authority, and never listened to anyone, even if they were right. Then he learned how to be a part of the bigger whole, and finally gain respect for Prime.

You can also apply that to Starscream, Hot Shot, any bot named prowl or ironhide, see where i'm going with this?

He was the original rebel without a cause long before we had Dinbot (And yes i am a BW fan - and dinobot fan). I liked grimlock in the cartoon, i love both but of course i do have major prefence to comic grimlock, and then some.

I love Grimlock. Both cartoon (badass) and comic.

The comic had him one as a Autobot who basically had more in common with the Decepticon's than the bots but still fundementally a good guy who easily veared off.

As the cartoon goes he added a nice variation to the autobot ranks and the Dinobot centred stories tended to be very good (Desertion, Dinobot Island and grimlocks new Brain) and his popularity is clear judging by the fact the Dinobot's were still big characters in season 3.

He was a bad leader first time but that's what made his character better. Furman really nailed it too. The whole "he got the autobots ambushed on flo" is a minor point considering his actions saved them the issue before and he was forced by the Unicron situation to form an alliance by a dying Optimus, an alliance he would be unlikely to accept on his own terms. the situation there was just awful and mostly beyond his control.

i suspose becasue we haven't had a propper Grimlock type character since Dinobot in BW, his absence makes the heart grow fonder.
