Character discussion : This Week 'Ironhide'
Post
by Impactor returns 2.0 » Thu Mar 03, 2005 3:52 pm
This weeks first and perhaps only 'CD' as I like to call it is focused on old Ironhide.
So what are Ironhides best and worst moments, notable appearences, how much do we know about him and is he well liked by the fans?
Think of it like our very own TF:Universe.

I liked the bit in the movie when Megatron made him toy-accurate.
That's about it, though.
Grrr. Argh.

My favourite Ironhide moment is in T2006 when he's digging for Megs. Quite like the way he was drawn there too. He never did much else in the comic apart from hang around.
Of course he acted nothing like that in the cartoon.
Talking of the cartoon, his movie death was fantastic.

Yeah, that was great. Just the whole sense of resignation to what he has to do, even though he doesn't want to. Cracking stuff.

other than that though he was always a bit of a cypher in the comic though, wasn't he?
Even his Perchnace to Dream entry diesn't give us much.
Whilst the cartoon flat out refused to give anyone any char development at least Ihide was established with a decent char baseline (even if it was the stereotypical tough guy) - something that was aided by the voice acting.

He was quite cool in Dino-Hunt aswell
I would have liked to have seen him pair up with Kup a bit more, im sure you could drag some comedy out of them to.
Wasnt he a 'survivor' aswell tho?

He was part of Earthforce.
Oh yeah, he had that story with Bumblebee where he defeats some puzzles in order to destroy the 'new' (AM?) Devastator
I don't really like Ironide. His cartoon performance is one that just flat out annoys me, I'm afraid. Agree that his best moments would be Target:2006 and the Movie. T2006 as not only is the idea and execution chilling, using Ironhide as the one to dig Megs out is pretty interesting. Potential character depth I don't think he ever really got again. I guess he's kinda superfluous when you have guys like Kup and Wheeljack to use instead.
I also like it when he gets his head vapourised. Hooray! No more "Buht, Prihimueh!!"

His death is the best part. It's so pathetic it makes you want to cry, and it demonstrates why Megatron is supremely evil. "Such heroic nonsense!"

Target 2006 was definitely his shining moment. I like how you werent REALLY sure what he was doing or why he was grumbling to himself the whole issue until the end. It looked like he was just losing his mind and moving rocks.

Gotta go with Target 2006 as well, he showed some actual character development in that story.

I have to go with Dinobot Hunt rather than T:2006. That segment was utter class.

I never liked cartoon Ironhide, a bit too gung ho for my liking. T2006 was definitely his finest hour, with an admiring nod to the bit in G2 where he does the whole "Nooo...Mirage!" bit.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

yes edit balls.
So To summerise.
Name: Ironhide
Affiliation: Autobot
Appearences: G1 Comic Arc, TF:Movie
Profile: Ironhide was your 'tough guy' and thus horribly stero-typed by both the comic and the cartoon.
Greatest moment: Target:2006, Ironhide is digging his own grave when he litterally digs up Megatron and soundwave for help in defeating the future Decepticon leader, Galvatron.
Worst moment: Megatron kills Ironhide in what can only be called an execution in TF:M - Ironhides 'Heroics' and strong hide didnt serve him to well...
Fan popularity Rating:
you get the idea, feel free to add.

Yeah, gotta agree with anna there, his toy really was bad, on a par with Go-Bot technology.
Still, I always liked him, a tough-bot cliche, but there`s nothing wrong with that, in fact, it`s quite endearing. The fact that in WW they tried a bit of characterization with him and Kup being old buddies was a nice touch, it`s a shame that nothing more will probably come of it.

You know I wouldn't be surprised if Ironhide was spin off casualty of Prime's death. If they were getting rid of Peter Cullen's more important character, I'm sure it must have made sense to kill the other one off and let him go, or Cullen decided to leave if he wasn't doing Prime. And voice actor changes in cartoons are just annoying. Ironhide didn't stand a chance.
![Very Happy :D](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
(same reason why I was able to instantly recognize that I was watching the Simpsons episde where Maud Falnders dies when I noticed her voice was different)
I still get a warm feeling inside at that scene, cause his cartton incarnation was soo annoying, only the gory death of Daniel, Chip Chase, Marissa Fairborne, or Spike circa seasons 1&2 , could have brought me more glee.
That said it's a pity that he didn't get more air time in the comic, he was shaping up rather nicely. And Target:2006 was definitely his best moment.

I thought the consensus was that was a good moment?
For me, his worst moment is in Time Wars when he proves absolutely useless, assuming Prime is dead when he's seen the Limbo effect before.

I never mourned Ironhide, but was PO-ed when Prowl died. Even more PO-ed when years later I watched the cartoon throughly and realised the closest time Prowl ever had any similarity to his comic counterpart is in "The Core" where he actually seems to lead a unit. Other than that, he rarely ever had speaking parts...
Ironhide, well, Simon could have done more with him. And I guess Bud had done, too, if it wasn't for Blaster coming first. There can't be two tough guys in one comic!
