Does this mean he has interiors coming too? Oooh. This is the itch. I have had it scratched.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

I can imagine. That's a very Yangerish drawing from Senior, whilst still keeping with the Senior style.bumblemusprime wrote:Does this mean he has interiors coming too? Oooh. This is the itch. I have had it scratched.

Yeah, it's odd that both this and Wildman's "Megatron on the toilet" cover have one arm far bigger than it should be. Is "Disproportionate Limbs Month" on the cards from IDW?
I'm actually loving the colouring on this more than the art (which is OK but not really solid gold Senior, as with most of his comic work over the last decade it has that feeling of something just done as a favour to Furman inbetween advertising jobs). If there's a plan to do a UK style series of alternate covers that's pretty cool, no doubt people who buy digitally will be working in photoshop the put the UK numbering on it as well.

He's made it very clear in the past that, as amazed and proud as he is people love the work he did in the '80's, comics no longer hold much interest for him and Transformers in particular never really did in the first place (which is likely why he never did more than guest spots on the US and G2 books). The odd cover and maybe a quick job like that Titan comic he did (though IIRC, like so many, drawing the moviebots was frustrating for him) is always possible but I'd be surprised if we ever say a full 22 pages from him. The money is better in advertising and he enjoys the work more.Does this mean he has interiors coming too? Oooh. This is the itch. I have had it scratched.

What DOES his advertising-work look like anyway...? And why the hell would any comic-book artist ever find THAT stuff more mentally rewarding than telling stories?
I've actually worked within advertising, very low-level simple stuff, yes, but I've done it. It's an ok job... there's a bit of creativity involved, but I can tell you this... compared to creating worlds, within worlds, within worlds, BEYOND those worlds...
Compared to the power cosmic that awaits us within the pages of a comic... compared to what a mind like Grant Morrison can conceive when UNCHAINED(!) Advertising is NOTHING!!
Take Jonathan Hickman for example, he used to do ads as well, before he got his shot at Marvel. Right before that, he was just about ready to put a gun to his head and blow his, or quite possibly, his boss's brains out.
So whatever the hell does Senior think he's doing that's so rewarding that he feels like he's not squandering his sequential talent?
( believe it or not, but being an illustrator is simpler than being a comic-artist. not everyone can build an impressive sequence)
Seriously. I wanna' see this stuff. It damn well better be hell'a' good. Anything else is a ******' tragedy.

I agree it's a shame, a lot of TF artists basically struggle to get other work because their strength is in drawing giant robots and there isn't much call for that in general comics (as Don found to his cost when he was forced to come back tail between his legs after walking off Beast Wars because the only other work he could get was on Terminator comics). But you look at something like Senior's drawing of the Fantastic Four in that Death's Head crossover and it's stunning. He should have gone on to be at least a big a name as Hitch managed.
Hell even this, which isn't his best, is still a very nice piece of work and, if I may give a backhanded compliment of sorts, my favourite thing by far to have come out of Regeneration One.
But ultimately he seems to have fallen out of love with comics, and never hugely enjoyed working on Transformers anyway (which to be fair was the case with most of the Marvel UKers, even the ones who've stuck around. It was first and foremost a stepping stone, a stepping stone they took seriously because they wanted the bigger and better work badly but still a fairly low rung in the ladder).
No idea what he exactly does in advertising other than it usually involving cars, which he loves drawing. I got the impression he's at the very high earning level now though. He's found something he's enjoying and is earning a good living at it, so more power to the man even if it is sad we've probably missed some great art over the last ten years as a result.
Just picked up the third in the Judge Dredd Restricted Casefiles series, and was pleasantly surprised to see in the credits Senior has some work in there. I can't think of an artist who would be a better fit for old'Stoney Face. Furman's in there as well (and with Dragon's Claws and Death's Head being Rouge Tharg style stories anyway I'll expect him to be a good fit as well) but not on the same story.
You know what I found out the other day that really blew my mind though? Jeff Anderson found religion after drawing a Biblical comic and is a curate now. Why didn't Primus have that impact on him?

I work within advertising at the moment, mainly as a writer, but partially as an illustrator.Predabot wrote:What DOES his advertising-work look like anyway...? And why the hell would any comic-book artist ever find THAT stuff more mentally rewarding than telling stories?

Must say I agree for the most part - it's a creative job, but comparing the sort of creativity you need for advertising campaigns to the creativity you need to create epic fantasty / sci-fi worlds is like comparing a 10k run to a marathon!
I'm actually seriously considering dropping into freelance and trying to get some work in illustrating book / comic covers or something similar.
Advertising is well paid but it's hard to stay passionate about it.

I agree Senior should've been as big as Hitch, but it wasn't to be. (He said as much in our interview: http://transfans.co.uk/interviews_geoff.php)

Cars? Really? Well, he is rather talented at drawing tech and architecture, so I can kind of see how he would enjoy such things.
Agreed. It would have been glorious...Just picked up the third in the Judge Dredd Restricted Casefiles series, and was pleasantly surprised to see in the credits Senior has some work in there. I can't think of an artist who would be a better fit for old'Stoney Face.
I do wonder... which big-time post-Moore/Gaimann UK-writer would Senior have worked best with, had he gotten the chance?
Millar? Ennis? Ellis? Hickman? ( yah yah... not a brit, but he's close enough, I say!)
Used to be a graphic designer myself. =)Mr_Tigg wrote: I work within advertising at the moment, mainly as a writer, but partially as an illustrator.

Anyways, I think you should go for it, man. Save up some cash for a year or so, and then give it a go. Trust me, doing art can be very rewarding, life-changing even, and always for the better.
Even if you don't get big or whatever, you can always say that you tried. How many can say the same? Hardly anyone. Most just sit on their bottoms and suffer in silence, without passion, without hope.
Do it. You won't regret it.
I appreciate the kind words man. I'm not especially fussed about becoming a big deal - I'd just like to be successful enough to pay my way so to speak.Predabot wrote: Used to be a graphic designer myself. =)

The general consensus in terms of advice I'm getting is "go for it".

Geoff Senior art is quality but I agree with moany dalek, it's not up to his 80s/early90s level stuff, for all the reasons noted.
I came across this cover on another forum and was stunned to see some of the posters there saying his art wasn't good...
I ******* nearly stalked them over the internet with the intention of phoning their wife at work.
Jesus, the ***** don't deserve legs...
