Bring Furman Back with G1 # 81!

Post by DecepticonsRule » Thu Mar 31, 2011 3:47 pm

In a recent Q&A Simon Furman indicated he would be interested in continuing the original Transformers continuity that ended in 1991 with # 80.
6. The GI Joe fans are thrilled that Hama has continued the original ARAH continuity and that has sparked some of us here to ask Andy if the same could be done for TF’s. Have you given any thought to continuing the original TF continuity from the Marvel run? And an even better question is, are you even interested in going down that road?

SF) I actually would like to pick up the baton from Marvel issue #80 and run with it again. There was a lot we never got to do, that I’d like to revisit or just to take the next big steps with all that we’d set up in the previous 20 or so issues. I’d certainly rather do G1 #81 than G2 #13, as, strangely, and for no good reason I can formulate into words, I think the time has passed for G2. It was very, well… 90s.
A couple of members at the IDW forums are trying to mobilize fans to show support for this title so that IDW hears we want this!

That's fascinating, though dropping G2 entirely won't be to everyone's taste.

Ooh I like the prospect of more things being rent asunder and becoming god like :)

I reckon Furman'll have Bludgeon rebuild his Decepticon army, have a massive mobile battle station ('War World' sounds good, don'tcha think?), and maybe bring back Megatron along with a new faction of Transformers who could be a threat to both the existing factions.

Yeah, that sounds sweet. ;)

Saying G2 was too 90s is like saying G1 was too 80s.

C'mon Simon. G3 #1... you know it makes sense.

Wouldn't there be some conflict there with the fan club comic thing that continues from 80 but ignore G2 and the UK stuff? Even with a much smaller audience I'm not sure Hasbro would want something to encroach on one of the unique selling points of their attempts to get fans to send them money for a crappy magazine and eye wattering exclusives.

Plus, it's worth having a read of Furman's sign off on the letters page to 80. It basically reads "Hey I'm awesome! And writing Robocop! Sure, that Benny Bladerinsky guy wrote a lot of issues but if you count the UK stuff I'm the best! Buy Robocop! I brought all the UK artists with me, that was my idea that was, not just a case of them not being able to find any Americans who wanted to drawn the book. ROBOCOP. look out for the Neo Knights comic! IT NEVER ENDS ROBOCOP!!!!!".

It could not be more blanent that despite some crocodile tears he's pretty much glad it's over as he's going on to newer and better things (we all loved the Neo Knights right?), and I really doubt he'd have stuck with it much longer if the comic had continued, it was only supposed to be his foot in the door at Marvel US, not his lifetimes work.

not keen on the sacking off of g2.

And if you want people to forget about it - don't resurrect Jhiaxus in your IDW continuity Mr F!

still, signed anyway

edit - i'm in the 70's - this has a long way to go if IDW are gonna pay any attention...

Andy Wildman Weighs in on Possible TF# 81: Says "Sign t

Will there be a Transformers #81
April 4, 2011
by wildman
.There is a bit of a buzz at the moment on the interenet about there being a Transformers #81. Thought I would add my perspective on this.

A while ago myself and Simon Furman considered the idea of picking up where we left off with the old Marvel Comics run of Transformers. For me it came about because after doing a series of six covers IDW asked me to do some interior art for their Transformers book. I wasn’t particularly interested in doing any so they asked me what it would take to do some. Well the obvious amswer would be copious amounts of dallar but to be honest it wasn’t about that. It was more to do with the fact that I was happy to just do cover art for Transformers and that I am busy doing other stuff these days. I gave it some thought though and put to them that it would be possible under a couple of conditions. First was that I would want to work with Simon Furman. Second was that we would want to do something that had a point. Something that felt like it was really saying something. I came up with the gist of an idea and put it to Simon. He ran with it and things began to take shape. What was clear was that it fitted well into the continuity of our old Marvel run. IDW agreed that there is precedent for this with the fact that GI Joe recently picked up on Larry Hama‘s old Marvel story threads. So. An idea took shape and we almost had it until the current economic siutation put the breaks on it.

So where are we now? Well it is clear that IDW are not resistant to the idea but in these current times of relatively low comics sales they would need to feel confident that it would sell.
So what can be done about it? If you are interested, sign the petition that is going about. Get enough names on that and it would clearly be a viable project. Of course it remains to be seen who would draw it as there are other interested parties but I think it is safe to say that Simon would love to get his teeth into it.

Roll Out!

So IDW can make the decision to release less popular licensed comics but can't take a chance with the continuation of Furman's Marvel run, despite the fact that Hama's continuation of the Marvel run of G.I.Joe has outsold or sold as well as the current IDW G.I. Joe stuff?
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Signed even though I would rather see G2 continued.

Someone needs to recruit Geoff Senior for this as well. For when Andy gets tired.

Ah, if only petition signing was as effective against world poverty and global warming as it is against comic book publishing companies.
