Eh. I'm not a real fan of the "bulky limbed" artists, like Lee, Ng, Matere, Milne, Ruffulo.
Not sure why IDW is trending towards these guys for big TF projects.
Maybe Don and Nick are not so much at their disposal as originally thought. And E.J. is busy with the main title, so he's out.
I heard Don was venturing out into new arenas, and I guess Nick is busy with the Dr. Who stuff.

"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Just not my style. I'm more of a Roche/Senior/Figueroa kind of guy.spiderfrommars wrote:I wouldn't put Matere in the same category as those others frankly.
He's good.
And I would put Musso in that "bulky" list, though on that Ramjet Spotlight his style was different from his Ultra Magnus spotlight, where the characters were so balloony I thought they would float off the page.

It's the face and eyes. They're all very similar and somewhat expressionless.Best First wrote:maybe, but i think i agree.
the art is technically amazing but it lacks chracter in some ways.
He's my favorite TF artist despite this, but could improve in the emotions department.

Well apparently you'll get a break.spiderfrommars wrote:I'm bored of Figueroa. I feel pretty bad for saying that tho.
From TFW:
It's all your fault.TFW2005: Other than what you do for IDW Publishing, do you have any other jobs? Are you still working for Hasbro, or perhaps working with other companies?
Don Figueroa: I'm actually off Transformers comics nowadays. I'm still doing occasional TF stuff for Hasbro, Botcon and IDW, but I really want to do other things now including a creator owned series that Harold Tietjens (AKA Hiro Prime) will be helping me on. I've pitched it to IDW and I don't think they've rejected it yet but they really haven't made a commitment to it either. I might shop it around, I dunno.
I'm also helping out former IDW editor Dan Taylor with his own Mech-based series and I'm also hoping to work on another book soon for IDW, I'm doing character designs for it now.

I think that's a major blow to Transformers comics.spiderfrommars wrote:Interesting.
I'd say he's still the fan favourite though isn't he?
Next to the newer crop coming through, I don't find his TF art as dynamic.
I mean, yes, there are other good artists out there, but I would say Don became somewhat of a standard bearer for how good TF comics should look.
He certainly raised the bar after his DW debut.

I think IDW have shown we're not reliant on just the one artist.Yaya wrote:I think that's a major blow to Transformers comics.spiderfrommars wrote:Interesting.

And being the apocalypse, Pat Lee re-writes and re-draws every existing marvel TF comic with a crayon and seizes and destroys every IDW comic ever made ever just before waving his penis in your face while you sleep.BB Shockwave wrote:Well, yeah you're right on that.
I mean Furman announcing he's off TFs and ready to move on would signal the apocalypse, no?
Did I go a bit too far or am I right on the money?

Script Wrap up and running.
I get the feeling the other Dynobots may not be happy with Grimlock when they realise what he did in Shockwave...

I think alot of new TF artists are technically excellent artists.
The TF are drawn using almost enginering precsion, and I expect the same distant perspective methods most enginers use to drawn mechanical drawings.
What i think nearly all of them lack is cartoon license, or perhaps artistic license.
To many drawings I see, whilst technically perfect fail to convey any sense of drama, movement or dynamic action.
All i can relate this to myself is animating in 3D, for example, I recall animating a slinky once, I know it was perfect, it used all the physics that a real world slinky does, yet, it was dull...
In a cartoon I know now that there would of been more emphasis on the forward movement towards the camera, more compression and bulge as the spring compressed etc...
Thats not to say somthing need look like a tom and jerry cartoon but ive learnt by studying film animation techniques from star wars to lord of the rings, that even the most realistic CGI animation is faked to a large degree to create power and drama within a scene.
Its tough in comics as u have to tell the story without actuall animation between scenes, but artists like Senoir for example, whilst not the most technically gifted of artists could make the frame come alive by bending the rules just enough for your mind to wander into the next pose and frame of the object.
Im not entirely sure why the current artists dont have the same knack for pulling this off, perhaps its the medium they work in, computers making things very precises etc... as it stands I rarelt feel the movement or energy that I used to feel from the old G1 comics, and the visual story telling from frame to frame isnt as dynamic as it was over a decade ago today.
Computers, the key to wonderfull images and colours, the downfall of flair and design? perhaps...
