Could it be?
A theory about the designs?

Very interesting! The hypthosis sits well within the available circumstancial evidence.
Even if true, I still think they could have developed better designs that were exclusive of the other TF lines. I mean, there is no excuse for Megatrons hands......

That the movie designs are so far from that of 'normal' transformer designs specifically at Hasbros request. Essentially to protect the copyright of the iconic TF images.veritech wrote:So what was the theory/rumor?
So, if the movie Prime looked like classic prime, hasbro would be handing the rights to that image to Paramount, to a certain extent.
And if it all goes pearshaped it protects the classic brand. Or something like that.
IIRC

Weird theory, and not likely true. Surely Hasbro had a great influence over the movie designs, they could have told Bay not to do anything radical, but they let him go along. I think Hasbro wanted these new designs, they wanted to do something radically new to spice up the franchise.
