Pat lee splits with DreamEngine?

Post by Best First » Tue Jul 18, 2006 1:39 pm

It seems that Everyone's favourite Transformers Artist (TM) may have run into some similar issues at DreamEngine as he did at Dreamwave.

Rich Johnson at Comic Book Resources reports
Forget John Byrne, Alan Moore or "Lost Girls." Back to the numero uno LITG obsessional target. Pat Lee. Previously, with his brother Roger Lee, heads of Dreamwave, a company that spent a lot on the party lifestyle and Porsches (for Pat and Roger), had a secured loan from their parents (which sucked out any capital when the company went bust) and then formed DreamEngine, which was siphoning off the revenue stream from Marvel before the collectors were called in. And who is now working for DC on "Superman/Batman."

Well, it seems Pat Lee and his partners at DreamEngine have had a big falling out. I'm told it's down to how money is being spent without making much for the company in return. And now Pat is no longer a part of Dream Engine. Staff are in dispute with the three parties, as Pat is refusing to pay his staff because he believes that it is the LA partners' responsibilities (which it may well be) - however those artists continue to work for Pat on his comic book assignments. Sound familiar?

Maybe they're being paid for in muffins from Just Desserts...
the suggestion that this may lead Pat to form a new company named DreamPotato remains pure speculation at this point.

Unbelievable. I'm going to assume however that one of his business-partners, namely his brother is not in dissagrement about money-things?

They are still co-owners of most DreamEngine stuff, no?

These investors , the "LA Partners" what can we assume that they actually do for DreamEngine? Pat says according to this rumour that they are the ones that are obliged to pay some of the employees.

Hey, those artists aren't people, they're simply pistons in the engine which produces Pat's Dreams, ok?

I will be among the first to congratulate Pat when his next company, DreamGoose, lays its golden egg.

Then, I'll be among the first with a whisk when the egg cracks.

At Chicago's giant comic book convention, Wizard World, I asked Marvel EIC Joe Quesada why, if they'd just signed Michael Turner, did they still need the services of a no-talent thief like Pat Lee. He answered my question with a "no comment" and refused to even look at me again for the rest of the panel. This was rather amusing as I was sitting right in front of him and you could actually see him averting his gaze when he would accidentally look to my eye-level. Ironically, though, since signing Michael Turner (and Aspen Studios), I don't think Pat Lee and DreamEngine have done a single piece of work for Marvel. Apparently Marvel agreed with me after all.

A good name for his next company: Dream Destroyer. At least he excels in something.

After all is said and done, do you think there'll still be a place in comics for Pat Lee?

Hey come on guys, don’t take cheap shots at Pat. Perhaps if you could see it from his perspective…

Unfortunately I can never see Pat Lee’s perspective, especially in his artwork!

A gossipy update on the nefarious doings of Mr Lee:
My sources inform me that Pat Lee is no longer a part of Dream Engine and that the departure involved a dispute over personal projects. The Executive side of this disagreement seems to be saying that Pat Lee was using too much company money for personal projects. Pat Lee's side seems to be that built-in caps on the amount of money Pat Lee was able to make on Dream Engine work justified more emphasis on separate deals. Fall-out over this clash seems to include Pat's brother and co-investor Roger Lee, who I am told was also let go, and allegedly the pulling of extra funding for Dream Engine.

As a result, I currently understand that Pat Lee is refusing to pay certain Dream Engine artists, even those working on projects credited to him, and who are now told to ask Yeon Yi for money. It's not looking good. Dream Engine e-mails, phone numbers and even the website are dead. The site is currently in admin mode, which can make for some entertaining statistic reading (apparently on an average of 11 hits a day).

Pat Lee recently helped his partner, Aimee Chan to win Miss Hong Kong 2006. He's been in Hong Kong for the last month or so while Alex Milne has been helping him get his work done.

Milne has been ghosting for Pat on most of his recent work. Previously credited as background assistant, when creating entire backgrounds, design and page layouts, after he took over drawing characters as well, he stopped getting credited at all.

Let IDW hire Pat Lee to draw the (live-action) movie tie-in comic!

Imagine that wirey/naked Prime in marshmellow style! The movie will be ruined! Cobraaaaahahahahaha!!! OK now I'm ranting. Sorry. Still can't get parts of the script out of my head...

No. I rule. Know why?

I pay my employees (decent wages too) and don't take credit for their work.

right.

Firstly, its clear that a statement such as “manga pwns all comiics” is an unquantifiable assertion given the ridiculously broad headings of ‘Manga’ and ‘Comics’ an the huge variance in quality within both sub headings. You could almost go so far as to say that such a simplistic statement makes you look a bit of an uneducated moron.

Secondly its Tokeo Storm Warning. Getting your facts right is again a good idea if you want to avoid looking like a bit of a rasclatt.

Thirdly what artist would try and draw a comic without a script in front of him? This criticism seems so bizarre that I am starting to think you may have missed a repeat prescription of some kind – please look into this, I would hate for them to have to cart you away again just because you missed a dose. Think of all the Manga and l33t speak you would miss out on.

Fourthly if any of these artists can’t tell stories with their art it seems rather likely that they inherited this skill from Pat doesn’t it? Seeing as he couldn’t tell a story with art if his old chap depended on it. That is assuming he hasn’t in fact already given his peewee to Satan as some kind of down payment.

Finally even if Pat’s employee’s had nowhere else to go he rather robbed them of any choice given that he stopped paying them, did he?

Thanks for saying that we “Ain’t sh**” – its nice to not be sh**, by which I can only assume you mean good.

I mean if I were you I would certainly look up to pretty much everyone.

Nobody here would make the argument that "manga is for kids" anymore than they'd say that comics are. We're not hating on Manga. We're hating on Pat Lee. Why are we hating on Pat Lee?

Pat Lee, at great personal expense, bought the Transformers comic book license. He gave the job of writing it to someone who clearly had no concept of what ANY version of The Transformers was all about. To make thing worse, Pat Lee's art (not his style, not his influence, his art) made the first TF series completely incomprehensible. Characters were drawn so far off model that the only through the actions of the colorist were we able to tell who was who.

Dismal first volume finally over, he brought in some new guy to write while continuing to draw characters off model, out of scale, and for reasons we're still not entirely sure of, really REALLY puffy.

Right around that time he brought in some talent that had an established fanbase. Veteran Transformers writer Simon Furman, and fan favorite artist, Don Figueroa. This decision proved to be the ONLY one that he'd made that seemed worth a damn, so he brought in more fan artists like Joe Ng and Guido Guidi. These guys draw the bots the way they were meant to be drawn and fans ate it up.

Then came the holidays and a whole bunch of delays. Books shipped weeks late, months late, then not at all. Over the Dreamwave Christmas holiday, Pat Lee told his employees that the new year would get them back on schedule then promptly filed for bankruptcy protection. Writers and artists were unpaid for the last 3 months worth of books. When Pat refused to accept delivery for the most recent art they'd turned in, they got stuck paying the Fed-Ex fees when they were returned to their senders. The only secured creditors were his parents. The only assets that weren't liquidated were the two Porches that he'd purchased with company money. None of his employees were ever paid and most learned of the company's collapse on Fan Sites like this one, because he never bothered to contact them himself.

Then, within a WEEK of completely screwing over these people, he started up a new company called Dream Engine. He then proceeded to do the EXACT SAME THING to another group of young artists. This time, though, the entire company was working entirely to make him look good. No credit was given to any of these workers. The only credit you saw on any of the books Dream Engine worked on was "Pat Lee: and Dream Engine." It came out recently that most of the work that Pat Lee took the credit for was done ENTIRELY by other artists.

We don't hate Manga. We just hate this vile excuse for a human being who screwed many of our friends out of tens of thousands of dollars and caused the Transformers comic book license to be held up in legal limbo for a year. We hate his art because he's a terrible artist. He can't tell a story to save his life. Most of the art he's done over the past 2 years hasn't even been his own. He's the worst kind of human being and I would like nothing more than to read on Comic Book Resources that he'd hung himself in his own basement.
