New TF/GIJOE Crossover

Post by Yaya » Thu Dec 08, 2005 4:21 am

Devil's Due have published what appears to be an advert for another TF GI Joe crossover - whether this is a continuation of their previous series or a reboot after the end of DW and IDWs aquisition of the licence remains to be seen.

Or, as Yaya's original post read:

Oh ****. Not again.

So why do we think these crossovers rarely work?

Because they're trying to shoehorn two seperate continutinities/universes together. Too many established characters not enough pages...

i think its because they are, IMO, bascially incompatible - a bunch of humans with a bunch of human weaponry vs huge spectacularly advanced alien robots.

doesn't really sound like a fair match does it?

Plus TFs suddenly getting involved in very human affairs seems a bit inconsistent with established continuity.

I think these are my main concerns too.

Not even remotely.

Yep. And we end up with a human centric story and a Joe bias. Bah!

I did find Dreamwave's takes to be quite original though. I was intrigued by the first issue of the second volume too.

my problem with that was why would GI Joe be tasked to deal with the TFs? They are a counter terrorist unit.

Plus - Pat lee drawing humans is really not my cup of tea.

I got the impression he hardly drew it at all tbh and they just stuck his name on it!

I thoroughly enjoyed Shockers incinerating Tomax though :)

If they're going to do it, then I really really hope they show some really weak TF massacre a whole load of GI Joe/Cobra characters with no hassle. Even if it's just faceless extras dying, that's enough to make me really want to buy it. GI Joe and TF crossovers should routinely include such a scene. Unfortunately, the nearest we ever got was Magatron trashing a whole loas of Action Force vehicles.

And yeah, those two franchises cause big problems with crossovers because they've both got a very large "core" cast compared to pretty much any other set of characters you'll ever work into a crossover.

I alway thought it'd be a better (and more fun! :D ) idea to instead 'amalgamise' two franchises into one, like the Amalgam Comics do.

Like, JL members merged with TFs, or Cobra/Joes. It'd something that's actually new in TF comics.

Because they make about as much sense as Hunter S. Thompson after an adrenochrome binge?

Because we've had, what, four of five of the things? With crossovers, you rarely get a writer who knows both sets of characters and can use them well, PLUS an interest concept extending beyond "let's throw these together", PLUS can overcome the throwaway aspect. They're typically art exercises.

WildCATs/Aliens being an excellent example of how to do a crossover right, IM(NS)HO.

Right...when we get these things they're usually written by Joe writers who treat TFs as either plot devices or hardware. No way would Snake-Eyes be able to decapitate Laserbeak.

Basically when Furman's not writing the crossovers, the TFs get shafted.

That's the very reason we want to see these. SQUASH. A lovely vegetable.

I think, even tho not all will agree, that even something happened with the last issue, Transformers/G.I Joe WWII was the best one of the lot. Seemed to do decent justice to both properties. Only decent justice, since the TF's could obviously have used more screen-time.

Best.TF/Joe.Moment.Ever. That, and finnally seeing the Dinobots almost completely demolish Shockers made the series barable.

I acctually liked Superman/Aliens. I really didn't expect to like it, but I acctually did. Ending is great.

Hmmm, I'd probably put it third, after the Marvel UK one and the G2 one.
