Get Well Soon Don Perlin

Post by spiderfrommars » Mon Dec 05, 2005 11:07 am

Perlin was one of the longest running artists on the original US TF comic run. There's a nice write up for him here:

And there's also an email address there so you can wish him well.

Man. Perlin was certainly the back-bone of the US TF-comic. :) And he seems to be quite the gentleman.

Rather sorry for him to be ill now. :(

He did some of my favourite TF-art of all time, the original profile-art in TF: universe for Galvatron and Sharkticon.

Also, I managed to find a pic of the raw art of his from the TFTM comic-adaption, looks a bit different from the butchered, inked and coloured piece, no?

I hope, that if he gets well, that Ryall will take the opportunity to ask him, for a cover. :)

Hmm... maybe I really oughta give him a small e-mail and wish him well? Could be the good deed of the month this.

That art does look nice.

Fans go on about how DW's inks butchered several artists work. Look back again at the treatment some of Perlin's TF stuff got at the hands of Marvel!

that picture looks inked to me, but i remember how bad the final page looks, hmm... Roddy loks ovely top left.

i seem to rememebr the colouring being the main issue with the US stuff.

I didn't realise Perlin was so old. 76! So he was, like, 58 when working on a toy comic! That same year Bryan Hitch was turning in his first TF UK stuff at 16!

Blimey.

Marvel US weren't exactly giving the job to any hot new talent were they?

It's remarkable how much of an effect bad colouring has...

I'm not going to send pestering mail—that's how it'd feel, personally, no slight to anyone who does feel like firing off a letter—but certainly do wish him well.

Utterly agreed. I'd be confused at getting "get well soon" emails from total strangers, even though I do hope he gets better soon. And that artwork looks brilliant without the colouring.

Thanks for drawing attention to this.
It's always nice to see uncoloured pencils, all the more so when you see how detrimental to the original the colouring was. Cheers, Preds.

Always had a soft spot for Perlin's work, that unbutchered TFTM art is top notch, shame they ruined his work there. :(

Hope Don gets well soon!

I hope he's going to feel better. :) Someone should rake together some topics like this from the net, and e-mail them to him.

I myself has decided not to impose on him tho, so I'm not sending an e-mail after all. A public wish of good-will is far more less imposing. :)

That tftm-page I dug up does indeed look inked upon some close inspection. Seems the inker did a decent job tho. However I still got the feeling that sometimes he got shafted by the inker. Would be interesting to see some really raw art of his. I'll have a look.

EDIT: It's rather hard to find un-inked TF art indeed. I found some other stuff of his, tho.

seems like his most smashin' stuff was when he was at some little punlisher called Valiant.

I think this Solar-page is inked tho.

FINNALLY! :D His raw pencil-work. RAMBO!

When Ian Akin and Brian Garvey inked his pencils they looked pretty good (pretty much everything from Command Performances to The Cure).

The earlier stuff may as well have been crapped on from a great height.

Then there was Fern's diabolical inking job on Buster Witwicky and the Car Wash of Doom.

I agree, the colours were yet another obstacle the whole time.

Delbo.... a different story I feel.
