the colourists asked me to stop using so much black, because it limited them in choosing light sources.
Colourists shouldn't bloody well be choosing the light source... it's not something you can chop or change (not and get good results, anyway); it's part of the scene as declared by the art.

I suppose this was because of Dreamwave's amateurish cut-and-paste approach with backgrounds and signs.

one more reason to dislike DW's approach to art.

Great interview though. Good work Spidey.

Actually, amateurish is perhaps the wrong word... the results look amateurish, but it's more the product of a conveyor belt attitude towards the artwork. Ikea without the structural soundness?

Er, on topic, good interview. :)

Informative and interesting interview. :) Raiz was perhaps my favorite artist on Armada.
Mr Raiz wrote:In all honesty, I haven’t read the first Death’s Head. I was a huge fan of the second. When I first started reading comics, one of the first books I got was an issue of Death’s Head II. So when the opportunity opened for Death’s Head, I jumped at the chance.
:D Me luv' yaa Mista Raiz.

great interview!

[though im bewildered at the inclusion of the picture in there that i colored. its one i had used strictly as practice and never really did ask to color it so i feel kinda guilty now. James could be looking at it and going "WTF?! who let this guy color this!?!'

sorry!]

xD

Sorry, my fault -- I've no idea where most of the stuff I have saved came from, only that it seemed to be a partner to the b&w Megs piece and was a bit more interesting than posting the Armada #3 cover again.

Looks darned good, anyway. :)

one thing that strikes me about this interview is the odd way DW agree projects.

oh, you can draw this.

oh, no you can't i'm doing it.

did they do anything right?

Yeah...
Pat Lee was supposed to draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but for some reason that fell through. So they decided to do a G1 Volume 2 with Pat, and pushed the Ongoing until the next year.
The subtext's quite extraordinary. Any and all agreements (in this case, Raiz drawing an ongoing after G1 volume one) seem to fall by the wayside in favour of keeping Pat happy.

And that's what gave us the mess of volume two, an ongoing story unsuccessfully squeezed into a six-issue miniseries.
