This has been going around for awhile now, but I've waited until now to present it on the ol' rumor page. Why? Because words have escaped me up until now. No longer, though.
Rumor: Hasbro wants to release a line of Star Wars Transformers.
Status: ABSOLUTELY TRUE!!!
Hasbro is in the planning/prototype stages of releasing a line of Star Wars Transformers. Now, this is not the typical "Let's have some vehicles turn into robots" concept that we've seen over the years in Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, or Marvel's new Megamorphs. These would actually be branded with the Transformers brand name (in smaller print below the STAR WARS logo).
Hasbro has tried this strategy once before with less-than excellent results. Perhaps you remember Animorphs? No. Consider yourself lucky. For the first time ever, super-collectors who'd spent thousands of dollars seriously considered leaving a 9 dollar figure on the shelf becaue it might not have been worth it. 15 grand for the Unicron prototype? Sure. 9 dollars for a kid that turns into a monkey...maybe I don't need everything.
But this Star Wars Transformers line would be different. We would see a Star Destroyer turn into Darth Vader, an X-Wing turn into Luke Skywalker, and two successful toylines turn into peg warmers.
Hey Hasbro, here's what's going to happen if you put these figures on the shelves.
Transformers fans will, almost immediately, realize that these are Transformers in name only (TINO) and would probably spend the dough on "real" Transformers.
Star Wars fans will, loudly, reject the "bastardization" of their toyline. You'd be guaranteed at least one guy in a Darth Vader costume showing up at Comic-Con with a "Darth Vader is no Transformer!" sign. He'd probably have a couple (dozen) Storm Troopers in tow.
Want to release some of these figures and actually sell them? Turn Transformers mainstays into Star Wars vehicles.
The Death Star-Unicron (duh)
Star Destroyer-Megatron
X-Wing- Optimus Prime
etc.
Transformers fans would buy 'em because they're actually Transformers characters and Star Wars fans would buy 'em because unless they were taken out of the package (and I've only met ONE Star Wars collector who didn't keep his stuff MISB) they're just some good sized Star Wars vehicles.

When I first read that there would be Star Wars vehicles that transformed I assumed that some kind of robot would be involved. Later I saw names attached to the vehicles, and I my heart sank because I imaged an animorphs-style transformer.
Are they really dumb enough to have the actual characters turn into vehicles?
(Stops and realizes that any question beginning with, "Are they really dumb enough..." will automatically end in a yes.)

Me too. With that Vector Prime out, and gorgeous, I thought the same.jboyler wrote:When I first read that there would be Star Wars vehicles that transformed I assumed that some kind of robot would be involved. Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

So why exactly is the "Transformers" name on the figures?

That's just gross! Taking your brother out for ice-cream instead of mentally scarring him for life? Man, you should be ashamed of yourself on behalf of all older brothers world-wide!sprunkner wrote:This is incredible. It provokes the same reaction in me as when I took my brother to an ice-cream place the other day and he ordered a "peanut butter-mint-root beer" shake. Seriously.

The Marvel "Transformers" are actually called Megamorphs. They're currently on store shelves throughout the US and Canada. There's also a 4 issue mini-series that is currently on issue 1.BB Shockwave wrote:Heck, we heard about the Marvel Transformers, and even those seem to be forgotten...
I don't think these will ever see the light of day. Maybe after 2007?

Why? They're just robots that turn into terrible looking battle-vehicles. They're not actually Transformers. There's also nothing "rumored" about them.Best First wrote:really? ugh.
