Fukushima nightmare

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

So Smooth, truth or exaggeration? If truth, maybe time to come home. The east coast of course

Scary stuff.

I appreciate your concern. I'm happy to report that just about everything in the link you shared is nonsense. It's right up there with climate-change denial and chemtrails.

You may not know, but my "home" in the US was Chicago, a city recently given the nickname "Chiraq" because of the dozens of shootings that take place every single week. Even if the concerns about Fukushima were legitimate, I'd still be safer here in Tokyo.

Cheers!

Interesting. And it is reported as so factual, you wonder 'how could I have not heard of this before?". Media is ****. That's the bottom line.

With respect, Yaya, that video is from "TrueActivist dot com" It's not "the Media". It's just some guy's blog.

Much of the American media certainly is, to various extents. It's always important to check the sources, no matter where you read the story.

Anything from Fox News, for instance, is immediately suspect. They're America's answer to the Daily Mail minus the subtlety. Plenty of blogs exist purely so their readers can stay secure in their own little bubble and not have to see ANYTHING that doesn't fit their worldview.

And they will ALWAYS present things as if they were the unfiltered truth handed down from God, himself. In fact, if you see a story that DOES leave open some room for doubt one way or the other, it's probably MORE believable.

Truth. Well said. In fact, many are going to Colbert and Stewart to get a more accurate picture of what's really going on because the real news is so off. Can you imagine? Having to rely on spoofsters for your news? Wow.

I think that's a misconception. It'd be very hard to get your news directly from Stewart/Colbert. If a person doesn't already have a pretty good idea about what's going on in the world, the jokes, commentary, and satire would be lost.

I'd also throw in John Oliver on Last Week Tonight for the groundbreaking work he is doing in journalism.

I really recommend his takedowns of the NFL, FIFA, the Wealth Gap and really honestly everything he discusses. His takedown of Ayn Rand was especially perfect.

The thing that Stewart and the others do that is different from the rest of TV news/commentary is legitimately calling people out when they are wrong or lying. Not in the Fox News/Brietbart "take some clips out of context and edit them together to cause outrage" way. Like, legitimate, "hand in the cookie jar" type stuff.

Which is what ALL of the media should be doing. When a politician is spouting obvious falsehoods, nearly every other talking head just lets it go. Stewart's guys expose them whenever they spot it. And they do it for liberals, conservatives, religiously inclined, and atheistic folks alike.
