Employment

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Employment

Post by bumblemusprime » Tue Jun 25, 2013 4:27 pm

I've been struggling to change jobs recently and had no luck. In academia, this can be an impossible feat--to move from one full-time position to another--and it's exacerbated by the fact that my current full-time position is good, but I can't stand it.

Currently full-time at a for-profit college. Yes, one of those. It was the only place where I could find work after grad school, and the kids gotta eat. Now I've got a decent salary and health insurance, but there are times I really can't stand the place. Oh, I grant you, it's not 100% terrible. They charge too much money and recruit like Mormon missionaries, but our curriculum is good, at least in the English classes. I've been there three years now, and dying to move on.

I have a part-time gig on the side at Northwest Indian College, and hoped it would materialize into full-time, but the current funding crisis hit already underfunded tribal colleges hard. And if they could find a full-time position for me, they would probably rather wait to hire a Native American (First Nations/North American Indigenous/Choose Your Term) candidate rather than hiring a white guy.

Sent out a few CVs a few months ago, and heard thunderous silence. This may have been because the colleges wanted to hire internally, which is part of the problem. As I want them to do at the tribal college, most colleges hire out of the adjunct pool; someone who has been involved and worked hard for years who is ready for full-time.

I can't seem to get arsed about some of the hoops you have to jump through in academia, either. I have no ideas or motivation for papers to write lately, or conference presentations... it just feels like time and travel money I don't have. I suppose if I spent the next year working on those things as well as the enormous teaching load, burning midnight oil, etc, I would get somewhere.

I feel your pain. There are certain careers that become hopelessly set in stone after your first few years making change incredibly frustrating and difficult. Law is definitely one of them.

Law school in the U.S. teaches you to be a generalist. You get your real training in the first 2 years on the job. So if you become a criminal attorney after graduating, guess what, you're probably gonna stay that way for the entirety of your career, because once you get past entry level attorney positions, everyone wants 5-7 years of experience solely in the field of law they are hiring for. Add in the fact that attorneys are licensed on a state by state basis and well, you better hope the State you are licensed in has a healthy job market...

It probably won't help, as I work in a very different sector, but I could look over your CVs? I've interviewed and hired before, although for software development roles.

It would be fun at least to talk on FB about it. You always give great advice.

Kaylee? Should I adjust my pronouns accordingly?

Update. I've got another job! I'll be running the tribal college's online program. As I have only enough knowledge to know the difference between open source and cardboard box, this should be interesting. They hired me because I have a lot of knowledge of online curriculum and online pedagogical theory, but I'm sure the IT guys see me as an ignoramus so far...

Looks fun, though. The other job became a real rut and now I'm looking at working with new systems, designing all kinds of new courses, and working with some people I like working with a lot. The only problem is the scramble for money. I'm going to have to turn the former job into a side gig, and invent all kinds of addendums at the tribal college. Sigh... Gotta love a country where paying an educator 75k$ a year is a ridiculous proposition, and where most salaries start below 50k$.

I'm half-excited, half-terrified. Being an adult is insane, isn't it? I should've stayed a kid. The only benefit is that the Transformers are cooler looking.

She ain't got the key to the eBay. She protests, she gets a stockingful of Throttlebots.

That sounded kind of creepy. Like a euphemism for "I'm a-gonna kill my wife." Disclaimer: Stocking Full of Throttlebots is no more than what it says, unless you use it as a band name or a euphemism for masturbation.

Erg. The money is looking really tight. We're supposed to buy a house this month, and get into it, and the monthly payment is getting more and more obscene. I am scrambling to try and think of all the stuff that I can do to make extra money on the side. This is the most anxiety I've felt in a long time and it's getting really frustrating.
