Calling all Karls (or anywayone else that can help) =)

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

PC help again I'm afraid. Wonder if I could pick your brains.

We bought our daughter a 2nd hand laptop (doh!)

It was working fine, but now she turns it on and the screen stays black and flickers for 5 mins before going completely black. However, the laptop is still on.

I think it might be the gpu has burned out, could this be it and is it a pricey fix in a laptop?

Thanx in advance.

Sounds like the backlight has burnt out. You could try looking for a replacement screen on eBay if you feel confident dismantling it?

Thanks Karl, that sounds a lot cheapr than a new gpu and maybe easier to replace. I'll take a look at ebay and then You Tube for a How to video.

Sounds like a plan :) you might find it's just a loose connection between the screen and the base, so maybe have an exploratory dismantle!

Had a look and the part is cheap, I lack the skill to change the backlight though (after watching a few videos). Looks to fiddley and my hands are too big. (I once made ddr2 RAM fit into a ddr1 machine)

I'll ask at work, I work for the manufacturer. They just don't give any agencey staff discounts.

Time to brown nose the bigwigs, luckily I have access to the Ivory Tower lol. (They have AC and tabletennis!)

well, I thought it might bring some new traffic to the forum. Further than that I did not think ^^

How about the trade forum? Not much goes on there anymore.

ANOTHER shrubbery? That's going too far!

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

It shall be put next to the first one, only a little higher, for a two-layer effect. With a little path running down the middle.
