Will I be cursing Patrick Vieira's name to hell?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Come the start of the season (or even the end of this week) Will I be cursing Patrick Vieira's name to hell?
And are there decent replavements for Wide boy Wenger can find at his usual bargain prices?. I may need some calming down guys over the next few/several/many months.

You'll get the best player of the past Euro championships, Maniche, in return. Those are players my team can only dream about, so quit complaining. :p

I think Vieira's off, because when compared to Real Madrid you're **** house. I told my Arsenal supporting friend this a few months ago. When a genuinely big club comes for your players, your players go. He of course laughed telling me Arsenal were genuinely big, despite the fact that you have an absoutely laughably poor european record and tradition.

And:

He did more for you than you did for him.

Thank goodness for Arsenal. Oh, if it weren't for them poor Paddy V would have been screwed - he was only at AC ****** Milan when you bought him...

Big player leaves club to further his career.

so what?

At the end of the day its a job.

Its not like he hasn't given you a decent amount of service.

Its like Spurs fans whining when Sol went to a better club for more money.

The only thing that could be ctriticised is Real's unsettling tactics.

And he's only been at Arsenal... seven? eight? years. Come on - where's the loyalty?

I tell you, he's just a traitorous mercenary who was never interested in the club and jumped ship the moment a decent offer came his way.

Scandalous.
Grrr. Argh.

That actually was not as cut and dried as made out.

He told us for 2 years repeatedly that he wanted to stay with us and would would renegotiate his deal. There are many many direct quotes from him backing this up. We actually turned down £12M and £17M bids from Manchester United having been led to believe he would resign.

Then he turns round and says "actually lads, I'm leaving. And you're not going to get any money at all. Because I want it all. True, I've been dishonest. Bad luck eh? But dont hate me, cuz I have a real affinity with the Tottenham fans, I feel bad about this but I want to further my chances in Europe. This has been a really difficult decision. I would love to return to your club later in my career"

So he signs for Arsenal, turning down Barca and Inter, two clubs with far greater European pedigree and also not our rivals.

The bloke is a slight liar if you ask me. Pretty much all Spurs fans understand his decision, till Arsenal comes into it.

It's tragic.

While I love Campbell abd all I'll be the first to seriously admit that Spurs fans have a right to be upset. I know I've always defended him (and you all know how passionate an Arsenal fan I am) but he accepted his fate to always be hated at Spurs and he DID work out his contract, he forced his club into nothing.
Vieira has been uncomitted and is forcing Arsenal to sell in the middle of a contract. The likes of henry and Pires at least have always publicy stated their intension of staying at Arsenal.

I don't understand why or how real currently are seen as more likely to win Europe than us? We had roughly the same run last season but Real won nothing at all last season and player for player we are as good but with less cash and they are made up to many ageing superstars that are on the wrong side of their peak.

Beckham-Where is he going to play now? He ain't taking Figo's place on the righ or the centre midfield
Figo-Starting to lose it a bit now. Has class but inconsistent domestically
Zidan-Already lost pace. Real depend on him to much.
The defense-All quite poor.

I know some don't consider us in the elite in europe but player for player we are as good as anybody.

Henry-best in the world
Edu-Now in the Brazilian first team.
Campbell-Still one of the best defenders
Cole-Improved greatly defensly, great going forward, among the best left backs (and he owned C.Ronaldo in Euro 2004).
Pires-Best left midfielder in the world
Toure-In one season ahs become a Campbell like incredible central defender. Could soon become great.
Van Persie-One of Hollands bright young stars and already proving his Bergkamp like class in our pre season tours.
Reyes-Already becoming a excellent striker. Started settling down quickly and had a good end to the season. Pre season he has been devestating and looks to be world class in the near future.
Ljungberg-Injury has had an effect but iis a deadly attacking midfielder and the longer he isn't injured the better he gets.

That looks like a world class team to me. Sure it's balanced out with having Lauren but no team is perfect ;)

Has he formally requested a transfer? Not that I'm aware of. Any bid that Arsenal accept for the player is down to the club.

They can quite easily turn around and say "no, you signed a contract - we're not going to accept the bid." If Real have been tapping him up indirectly, that would be their problem. If he wanted to go, and Arsenal weren't letting him, all he'd need to do is request a transfer and waive his portion of the fees involved. It's not like he needs the money, after all.

In short: If Arsenal have accepted the bid for him, blame the club as much as the player.

He's been here eight years (roughly). He's won everything on offer here. If he wants to go and have a crack at the Spanish game, I don't begrudge him it. Different environment, different style of game, different players to go up against, different fans. Footballers can't play forever, if they want to experience all these different things then they've got to take the opportunity when it comes along.

It's not like he's been with you six months and is taking off because you're struggling in the league, or seeing out his contract to fleece you out of everything he can, like so many other foreigners have done.

And it's not like Arsenal won't be compensated for him. Twenty million? You can replace him easily with that. You're going on as if it's the end of the world - that's tantamount to admitting that the team will be rubbish without him, yet you're convinced that the rest of the side are world class, so where's the problem?
Grrr. Argh.

You are deluded if you think terry henry is the best in the world.

See WC 2002? See Euro 2004?

See all your champions league campaigns?

He cannot head a ball for crying out loud. How can you be the best player when you miss the absolute sitters that he missed over Euro 2004?

Exceptional domestic league season last year. But dont delude yourself. I heard he's having trouble getting out of Ledley King's back pocket he got stuffed so far down in it.

As for Real V Arsenal... Dont make me laugh.

Real have European pedigree... You never EVER have. Real are USEd to winning big trophies. You are not.

If you cannot see this you are a fool.

What does that mean. By the end of the 80's, Liverpooool was the greatest european club of all time (debateable yes).

Now they are dirt. A high average team constantly comming close to winning nothing. Man Utd, dispite being kings in the 60's went and had a barren 30 years.

Currently it's the 'smaller' spanish teams who have knocked Real in 4th place in their own league and Real have to battle it out for a european spot.

Times change, new teams can be elivated and the old kings can be thrown into the mud.

As for Arsenal, we have made a lot of miskates and yes previously have never won 'the big one' (though we came close), however a team with 4 world cup winners, the best young players from Spain and Holland, half the english defense (who all always have a good tournament) and several other class acts (Ljungberg, Bergkamp, Leyhmann, Toure) is still a world class team. Maybe not yet the ebst in the world but we are up there and dispite your assurences last season the Arsenal will lose out to Man Utd we confortably won the league.
I'm pretty sure the Championship

I actually said nothing of the sorts regarding Arsenal winning the league.

You have never come close to winning 'the big one'. Fact.

Do you want to make a bet with me that you wont win it again this year?.

I'm sorry, but your talking wilde bollocks now. Real Madrid have been ******* MASSIVE FOR ******* YEARS.

Even when in the doldrums they are still regarded one of, if not THE biggest club team in football.

Fact is this: They are taking arguably your best player away. YOU WONT SEE ARSENAL DOING THIS TO REALFOR A VERY VERY VERY LONG TIME - IF EVER .

You ARE Englands SECOND biggest club at the moment, your blinkered arrogance MAKES ME LAUGH.

Henry - vastly overrated by your muppets. This is why: Our league is by and large a large pile of dog dirt when it comes to defending. Has he failed in his most recent major tournaments?

Oh yes - and oh so badly.

And thank you for the Liverpool bollocks. They may have found it difficult performing in Europe during the 80s tho, seeing as they were banned for most of it.

At any rate, the 70's/80's were when they established themselves and began to write their legend.

****** Madrid have been doing it since the 50s.

Anyway, allow Peter Cook to finish this post...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Derek supports Arsenal and you can see it in his face - that drugged zombie look that comes from substance abuse, genetic malfunction or even the occasional visit to Highbury. It started off innocently enough. His Dad, Derek - no foooking imagination, these ***** - was an Arsenal fan and to placate his wife, Bo, took the then young Derek junior to watch an
Arsenal-Ipswich match as a punishment for wetting his bed. Fair enough, you might say, but Derek, being a ****, became addicted to 90 minutes of boredom and began to watch the Gunners on a regular basis. He even interrupted his Saturday masturbation schedule in order to travel secretly to north London from Chadwell Heath. There he watched George Graham, Frank McLintock and nine other wankers stupefy thousands of otherwise ordinary decent folk'

As I recall, MAdrid didn't win europe for decades untill they won it in '99. Hardly doing it since the 50's. so '66 to 99 without winning Europe simply can not be described as "doing it since the 50's" :p

And I hardly claimed Arsenal were 'the biggest club in europe'. I am refering to the fact we are one of the best.

nicely done Ob.

Jets, you are deluding yourself if you think the champions league is a realistic prospect for you this season IMO.

And while i rate Henry in the Preiership, Pops is 100% right that he has had a dogged 4 years at international level.

As for the Sol Cambell thing tho - piss off! Football is a business - if a player worth 23 million is refusing to sign a new contract SELL HIM.

"oh, but he promised he would stay!"

If thats how you run your affairs its no wonder you have had such a pony few years. Might as well apoint Bryan bloody Robson...

hmm... bollocks.

yes but for 3 decades they won nothing. Blackburn has one of the best championship records. TheyBut that was made on their pre-war record back before the 30's. No one would claim they are better than Chelsea/ski now would they?

As a result we are a match for most of europe. It's still a cup and any team can have a hot streak and win. greece won Euro 2004 for fecks sake. previously stats were running around how they have never previously won in the competition in their entire history.

Anybody can win it, and on our day Arsenal can beat anybody.

Sure I might be looking through a bias Arsenal fans view point but we are a devestating team and have several world class players. We didn't lose a single domestic game last season and have learn'r from mistakes made in europe and strengthened the squad. We had the best defense last season, thebest attack and, dispite all your critisms, did pretty well in all competitions last season.

It is clear to anybody with eyes and ears that Arsenal are a good side.

But bringing up stupid extreme examples of football teams past glories clearly serves no use in furthering your point and is doing nothing to convince anybody that Arsenal will do anyhting other then make the QF again this year.

YES it's possible that you can win the CL, but recent history suggests you will actually get nowhere near it.

I'm losing interest now, even though I find winding up arrogant Arsenal fans with a misplaced overly superior opinion about themselves fun.

I was actually talking about the main one only. Otherwise Arsenal has won a couple in that time. As recently as '94.
