Oscars 2011

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

So yeah, it's that time, the Academy Awards.

I think, trying to be objective, I would give the Best Movie award to The Artist. Probably the best acting I've seen in years, particularly by the lead actor. I mean, if you can get me to sit through a black and white film with no sound, it's got to be something special.

Also thought Hugo and The Help deserve a shot. The production of Hugo was fantastic. The Help was good, but I think it's not a novel theme by any stretch. Never saw War Horse or The Descendents.

So yeah, gonna go with The Artist.

[composite word including 'f*ck'] me, I just realised I missed POTC 4. And pretty much every movie I'd meant to see this year.

Weird. I didn't even notice.

The Artist was phenomenal. The Descendants really very good.

I hated Hugo. Seriously. Oh, Marty's done a film that gushes over how wonderful and magical cinema is, and he's done it in 3D and filled it with big name actors. Least surprising nomination of the lot. The whole thing makes me feel quite ill.

I've not seen the others. I'm tempted to see War Horse if I'm bored enough, but there's no power on this Earth that'll get me to see Incredibly Loud while Muppets and Safe House are alternatives.

Hugo's going to win the ******* thing.

I hope Commissioner Gordon wins Best Actor. But Batman will probably beat him.

The production of Hugo I thought was fantastic. The whole world of the train station was just so well done, it felt as if you were actually there. It just had a nice vibe and the 3-D was probably the best from a live film. Granted though, the movie was too long. But it was in some ways magical and IMO, deserves an Oscar nomination. But not the win.

I actually thought We Bought a Zoo was worthy of a nomination. Not a big Damon fan, but I think he was superb in that.

Loved Kung Fu Panda 2 and Super 8. Even enjoyed the Muppets for what it was. Hope Kung Fu gets the win for Best Animated, but I'd wager that would go to Rango.

Never saw POTC 4 either. Apparently, I didn't miss anything.

The 3D on Hugo was appalling. Maybe it was the angle I was sat at, but it was ghosting all over the place. And, even if it is the angle, well that's the fault of the tech rather than me.

Pirates 4 had Ian McShane. Hugo didn't. Pirates 4 was better than Hugo.
Even enjoyed the Muppets for what it was
... for what it was? What was it then that makes it warrant a condescending side mention? Seriously.

Was it... a movie with some Muppets in it?

I always forget that the presence of Muppets automatically precludes something from being anything above tolerable.

I always think that it's the presence of Muppets automatically makes things 73% more awesome.

Must work on remembering that.

Speaking of which, if you want to talk to me I'll be at transfanswithmuppets.co.uk from now on.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Well, I'm happy. For once, the Academy actually got something right.

Best Movie-The Artist
Best Actor-Dujardin, The Artist
Art Direction-Hugo

Probably the first time I've ever agreed with the old fogies at the Academy.

Heh. Turns out my mate's dad won an Oscar for his sound work on Hugo. Now he's put a picture of himself up on Facebook hugging Holly Valance backstage! Bastard!
