Doctor Who Season 6 Part 2. Or Season 7. Or Season 32. Or 33. Or 34 depending on how you count the Specials year...
Lets Kill Hitler.
Well, assuming Nixon era Melody was either time travelled forward by the Silence (who aren't a species after all?) or regenerated again before the 90's the big question about this one for me is how did Amy and Rory get back from the future on Devil's Run for the start of the episode?
Considering the potentially huge pitfalls in the episodes premise, it could have been a disaster, but thankfully wound up a good deal of fun and Alex Kingston was clearly having a ball with the completely bonkers young River. Though anyone tuning in based on the "Doctor Who Vs. Hitler" pre-publicity would have been disappointed.
And so many long standing fan arguments dealt with in 50 minutes. Temporal grace= Bollocks (take that any spin off to feature it!), the Doctor gets at least 10 extra regenerations in a nicely jokey way early enough that the whole thing can be safely ignored when he comes round to his 13th life and we get on screen proof the physical changes brought about by regeneration include skin colour (and if I were cynical I'd wonder if this testing of the water with River was to see if there was a Daily Mail outrage at political correctness gone mad).
Oh, and a gratuitous Gillan in a schoolgirl uniform shot as well.

Er, at least? How does that work out? If (and it's a big if) Melody gave her remaining regenerations to the Doctor (and bear in mind he didn't regenerate, he just came back to life), rather than just swapping them for a resurrection, the most it can be is 10. Being that we've seen her regenerate twice, so that's the most she can have left.inflatable dalek wrote:the Doctor gets at least 10 extra regenerations
I'd think it was another one of your typos, if you hadn't made the same mistake on FB.
And no, I'm not going to let you say you're counting his remaining regenerations, as that doesn't add up either.
I'm going to assume that she's regenerated at least once beyond what we've seen, as a) the kid in Day of the Moon seemed to know what was happening to her (albeit she could just know what she is); b) her being Amy's contemporary can't possibly track sans time travel without another one thrown in; and c) it'll let the production team use the "omg it's actually Melody again!" trick a further time in the series.
And as far as how Amy and Rory got back, presumably River took them home by whatever method of transport she used to get there in the first place.

I say "At least" as there's some wriggle room over the whole 13 thing anyway. And I don't for a second think Moff didn't at least briefly think "This sort the regeneration thing!" when he wrote it.Brendocon wrote: Er, at least? How does that work out? Though oddly, the line about "Remaining regenerations" is the first time there's been even a hint of any sort of limited number since the show came back isn't it?
Mind, with the line thrown into to explain with the longer Kingston version of River looking slightly older than the older Kingston version of River from the Library story it's also (scarily) possible she just made herself much younger through will power or whatever.I'm going to assume that she's regenerated at least once beyond what we've seen, as a) the kid in Day of the Moon seemed to know what was happening to her (albeit she could just know what she is); b) her being Amy's contemporary can't possibly track sans time travel without another one thrown in; and c) it'll let the production team use the "omg it's actually Melody again!" trick a further time in the series.
Though it was sweet they threw in that fannish touch about River deciding to slowly make herself look younger to confuse people to cover the fact the actor is aging the opposite way to the character, but then had Amelia show up in the hologram looking equally slightly older than when the Doctor knew her (and amazingly at exactly the same age as the real one was in the flashback at the start of the episode).

Hm, dunno quite how to feel about it. On the one hand it was brilliant fun, but I thought it was almost too offhand and flippant about what is, essentially, the mythology of the modern series.
I was also hoping for a bit more, well, Hitler.

I thought it was rollicking good fun. There are a lot of haters around at the moment though, and yes, personally, I prefer episodic Doctor Who to the X-Files like multiple-season arcs we're getting now, but I'm much happier watching this than when Doctor Who tries to be grim (Almost People, Rebel Flesh for instance).
I thought the way Hitler was handled was hilarious. As soon as Mels regenerated I stopped caring about him anyway.

Snow White and the Seven Keys to Doomsday
A bit throwaway and obvious in places (though in fairness, I might not have twigged they were in a doll house so quickly if they hadn't promoted the dolls so heavily) but still nice and creepy with some great lines and special guest star Optimus Prime stealing the scene he was in.
One thing Gattis gets accused of a lot is being too retro, which isn't something I mind in particular (the fact none of his episodes so far have been anywhere near as good as his non-Who stuff us more of a problem), but I did find it interesting that this felt very much like an RTD era script. The run down council estate (more convincing than Rose's), attempts at social commentary (I'm surprised the Doctor didn't sort out the landlord), the Doctor inspiring a guest star to save the day and more than a smidge of Fear Her.
Oh, and it's lucky for the episode swapping that both ongoing story-arcs in each half season basically boil down to sinister staring at the Tardis scanner, which can conveniently show anything in post production.

I did think it became a bit obvious once it turned out the kid was behind it that everyone was going to be alright by the end as child psycho murderers isn't very Who.
We're well on the way to having had most of the Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes cast cast show up now, hopefully Philip Glenister or Keeley Hawes legs will be along soon. Incidentally, Daniel Mays pretty much shows how a John Simm style Master should be played in the last A2A episode.

The Girl Who Didn't Go Grey.
That was OK, mainly suffered from being a bit obvious (I doubt anyone thought for a second the old Amy would still be around by the end of the episode) and with the whole thing with the Doctor's death going on having another future of a regular turn up for a horrible fate probably wasn't the best idea (especially as it emphasised how easy it is to actually change such fates).
The only real surprise, the Doctor locking future Amy out, was then ruined by the scene just going on and on and on. Amy loves Rory, we get it. The Doctor makes tough choices, we get that as well. Get on with it.

When Is A Nimon Not a Nimon?
A nice atmosphere, but felt a bit too self consciously kooky, and the nurse character had sacrificial lamb written all over her. And David Walliams doing his Lou voice was incredibly distracting (though it was interesting he didn't get the traditional nasty comeuppance for untying that guy).
It was a bit of a shame they went and made a really cool new Nimon costume but then only made him a "relative", an attempt to avoid royalty payments? Still pretty cool though, and made up for those odd dodgy CGI ropes.
A very overdone ending again as well.

From the amount of "OMG, have they really gone?!?!" discussion I've seen online I do wonder if I've missed something obvious as I never once thought for a second they won't be back in two weeks for the grand final (if nothing else they'll need to be there for when we we the Doctor's "Death" from his POV won't they?). It just felt like an excuse to do a companion lite episode next week (no doubt filmed at the same time as The Girl Who Waited).spiderfrommars wrote:

Yeah. Like the Doctor suddenly realised "Mortal danger! That's what I've been putting them in all this time!" - I mean, how many times has Rory died now? And Amy's even snuffed it herself at least once (at Auton Rory's hands in the Pandorica episode) so it seems like an odd about-face for him to suddenly decide that the risk is too great for them to continue travelling with him. Then again, bringing Amy's family back from non-existence was a bit pointless if she never actually spends any time with them.spiderfrommars wrote:A bit sudden and not a wholly convincing 'exit' I thought.
Otherwise, though, a fun episode and the faith thing gave it a nicely dark undertone. Liked the Doctor's reaction to opening the door to his room too.

And the really daft thing is they started filming the Christmas special on the same day this went out, firmly answering if Rory and Amy have really left (and just to help out anyone who missed it one of the the actors involved merrily mentioned if they were or weren't taking part on Twitter).

Yeah that was OK, no great shakes and pretty much instantly forgettable but not a chore to watch and the Doctor and Craig interaction was nice even if the Cybermen plot was typically rubbish on their part. God knows why the Doctor was having such a hard time trying to work out their motives though when being on the back foot and desperate is their usual state of affairs.
I'm also now really puzzled as to why they moved Night Thoughts to the second half of the season when it's now closer to both another story with surreal nightmare imagery in last weeks show and one where a dad's love for his son saves the day.
And is Eyepatch woman's plot completely pointlessly stupid or is it just me? All she needs is someone to come out the lake with a gun and shoot him. Why the whole Machiavelli routine? She's got some soldiers who could do it for her. Or even just grab the gun and do it herself.

I watched this with an incredible hangover but enjoyed it for the most part. Funny at some points, touching at others, with a great last 5 mins.
Present day stories used to be a bit of a drag but Doctor 11 is so at odds with normal life and the people in it that it really works.
Stormageddon nearly stole the show though.

I'm just hoping they avoid the obvious and don't have the Ganger Doctor show up again to take the bullet.Brendocon wrote:Can't help but think next week's episode is going to be another smug [composite word including 'f*ck'] like Day of the Moon or Good Man. :/
I've actually seem a couple of arguments we've been following the adventures of two different Doctors with slightly different tastes (though that's more than a bit clutching at straws "Look, the one Doctor hates Rubik's cubes whilst at another time the other briefly holds one without comment!") over the last few weeks with each wearing a different coat. I'd dismiss that out of hand if not for the same "Look at the coat!" people being right last year. Curse them.

Not a Ganger, but I saw that coming right from the moment it featured in the "Previously."
And saw what "the question" was from the moment Blueboy mentioned it. Actually had suspected it for the past week.
So yeah, a repeat of "time is unravelling and the Doctor is at the centre of it" from last year (okay it was the universe last time, but whevs), two hyuge twists I saw coming a mile off, still no answer on what took control of the TARDIS last season, and the mystery around what River whispered to the Doctor in the Library deepens.
That said, I enjoyed it.
Though I did think for a moment that River's pyramid-top gizmo was sending a signal to take control of the TARDIS to sort things out, thus answering that question, but alas no.
"We should get a drink sometime. And also married."
"... okay?"
[EDIT] Remembered the other thing: Still no explanation for the events between The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon. Had hoped that, revisiting the events, we'd get some more info but no. Which means we still don't know how Team TARDIS found out about and remembered the existence of The Silence in the first place.

I guessed what The Question was yesterday, and then proceeded not to tell anyone in case I'd got it totally wrong.
Heh, even Madame Du Pompadour knew what was hidden in plane sight (watch it again).
I also thought it might be a Tesselecta Doctor after watching the Previously bit, but I bought the bluff later in the episode when the Doctor didn't ask it for help.
Quite a mental episode really, possibly too mental. But some really brilliant bits, including scary skulls, and The Silence (even if, unlike most Who baddies, they're susceptible to bullets).
I wonder if River will return? Her story's not fully told, but she's got on a lot of people's nerves by now. It can easily be wound up off screen, though I'd feel cheated.
