Somewhere there is a soldier who has realized that he is the culmination of the last ten years of US foreign policy saying "holy [composite word including 'f*ck']."

People are all over the place emotionally about this. I feel no shame about being gleeful. He was a twisted, murdering bastard. He manipulated everyone he could and took advantage of a population in crisis for his own rich-boy psycho hobby. And yeah, the whole Western political reaction to the 9/11 attacks has been full of utter f*ckingf*ckityf*ckups and corruption. And yeah, this might precipitate a hotter war rather than calm things down.

But a murdering, vicious bastard got what he deserved.

Whilst I can understand the elation many are feeling, it's the singing of "We Are The Champions" that seems most inapropiate. Because they're proclaiming it as bringing him to justice when it's really just about revenge?

Celebrating it like this is really only gonna antagonise the remaining elements of the network.

Haven't read up on the news about this yet, but a drug rep came in today saying they are giving Bin Laden a "deep sea burial".

If this is indeed the case, then call me skeptical that Bin Laden was killed. Or that he's even been alive these past ten years. Why a deep sea burial? So there's no way for independent resources to test the body themselves? I mean, come on. Why throw the body in the sea? I just don't get that.

Is that really what they are planning on doing, or was this drug rep misinformed?

Imagine what would happen if he was buried, you'd have a shrine for terrorist nutters, a target for attacks from people out for revenge. You'd be unlikely to keep the location a secret forever, it's just more trouble than it's worth. The only other option than burial at sea would have been cremation. Unless you're seriously suggesting they keep the body in a box in the Pentagon for all time?

As far as conspiracy theories go, Bin Ladden was always worth more alive and out there as the ultimate boogey man to justify any action the government wants.

Has would they prove it's him beyond all doubt anyway? Do we have his fingerprints/DNA on file somewhere?

Yeah, apparently they (US) did DNA testing and confirmed it was him. (Note, all the info I have is from this drug rep, who incidentally made the commment "the only deep sea burial I'm aware of was in the Transformers movie", which of course, led us to discuss TF, but I digress)

All I'm saying is, let international scientists corroborate this story. Then, I will believe it. But if the governement tells me, "yeah, we caught him, it's him, and we're going to dump him in the sea now", I'm not going to bite so easily.

I just always thought he was already dead, so this news comes as a big surprise to me. I just always thought, if those video clips were real, we would have caught him long ago.

Just a bit surprised, I guess, by this.

Well, him turning out to be in one of the countries we weren't looking for him (and almost certainly being hidden by that countries government, I doubt Pakistan could have missed a massive purpose built compound popping up in the same postal code as one of their main military bases) probably didn't help with the search.

If the US Government was really going to fake all this, wouldn't they do it closer to the next election? After all, it was about this far into his term than Bush Sr. had a 90% approval ratting following Gulf War I, he still wound up losing to Clinton.

And presumably if they do have DNA records of him and used those to verify his identity they can simply send the samples they took to any government interested without the body.

I still think the "deep sea burial thing" just doesn't make sense.

For one, it's not "in line with Islamic tradition", only for those who die at sea apparently. And two, why even respect the religious traditions of someone you've hated and chased for ten years? Why even give him that?

Doesn't add up.

If it is respecting tradition, seems a smart thing to do to me to be honest.

Shows that the war is with him not his alledged faith.
