Well, I think it was ******* amazing.
The street parties, her dress, the crowds etc... all bloody amazing!
kate will make a great Queen one day, she looked amazing, seems to take it all in her stride, and they both seem very in love.
Lets not forget, this is about to people getting married because they are in love.
Its great to see Britain united under the banner of love, it was beautiful!
Makes me proud to be British.

It's a carefully choreographed media event by some of the cleverest event organisers and power-brokers on Earth, albeit a very pleasant and entertaining one, I've no doubt. Much like the Chinese Olympic Games.
That said anything that you enjoy makes me happy

Come on, many events at the Chinese Olympic games took place because the people were told to do it. i dont expect any of the wedding events that took place happened against anyones will!Karl wrote:Surely that was the whole intention?Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:Well, I think it was ******* amazing.

Anyhows, i just enjoyed it, I love it when this country comes together, and I love a good wedding! people had fun today!
Kate looks ******* amazing, shes a complete pin-up!
There is no celebratory event that I can say has matched the opening and closing ceremonies of the Chinese Olympic Games. It was so good, it was just wrong.Much like the Chinese Olympic Games.
Now yer talkin me lingo.Anything that gets me a day off work is fine by me.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

I must say, I've thought about joining the Yaya religious club because holy MONTH is a damned sight better than a couple days off for Christmas.Yaya wrote:Now yer talkin me lingo.Anything that gets me a day off work is fine by me.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

I honestly didn't catch a minute of it. The excess of it in a time when people are losing their livelihoods because of a lack of public money is surely indefensible. I've read a pretty good essay that it was Caligula who first cottoned onto the fact that mega-celebrity glitz and spectacle is all you need to make the public smile and cheer while they're being terrorised. It wasn't that he genuinely thought himself a god but that he made it his public image. Clever thinking, eh?
Sorry to be so negative but I really do find these things sinister - all the more for their seductiveness. Much prefer seeing people working towards some common, appreciable good, rather than indulging in ever more extravagant pomp.
That last part is actually rather true. There's definitely something I find disturbing about the visual metaphor of hundreds (thousands?) of people all playing nameless, virtually faceless roles in a coordinated semi-nationalistic display or jubilation.Yaya wrote:There is no celebratory event that I can say has matched the opening and closing ceremonies of the Chinese Olympic Games. That said, it was a nice ceremony. It was live on Japanese TV and it was just a really nice hour or so of TV. I wish I could have been in the UK to celebrate with like-minded people.

Channel 4 factcheck puts the figure at £2.9 billion.Best First wrote:i imagine in terms of things like revenue from tourism, for London at least, you could probably make a pretty good benefits case to be honest.Jack Cade wrote: The excess of it in a time when people are losing their livelihoods because of a lack of public money is surely indefensible.
Even accounting for the lack of transparency around the cost I suspect a conventional advertising campaign would have represented a more favourable cost/benefit proposition, imo obviously.

I knew it! They've been teasing us about that for years, how could I have missed it?Rebis wrote:Adam and Jane from the BT adverts, apparently.
(besides ensconcing myself on a boat with no means of communication for the entire weekend, that is)

I only knew about it due to Absolute Radio (which I don't listen to, only to its superior sister stations Absolute 80s & Absolute Radio 90s, but they play lots of "Go listen to Absolute Radio!" amongst the other commercial crap) where apparently, they held a competition for 5 lucky* couples to compete during a week for the honour* of getting married live on air with* Adam and Jane.Metal Vendetta wrote:I knew it! Based on estimates, pretty sure this is more than offset by revenue lost due to the extra bank holiday.Best First wrote:i imagine in terms of things like revenue from tourism, for London at least, you could probably make a pretty good benefits case to be honest.

hmm. i've seen 2.9 billion in cost vs 4 billion in projected revenue so not sure.
then again not close to being convinced by either of these figures.
And either way, crossing over with another topic, notable that a whole bunhc of people who deride AV as it 'will cost money' seemed more than happy to attend this

One of my main irritations with our supposed betters in the monarchy is how their benefits are always really wooly and hard to quantify, whilst their cost is always hidden behind a wall of official secrecy.Best First wrote:hmm. i've seen 2.9 billion in cost vs 4 billion in projected revenue so not sure.

I might be talking utter garbage re the costs and benefits, but the total absence of figures and unwillingness of the political establishment to challenge this status quo concerns me.
Well, they can all sit in the House of Lords, so maybe their expenses are available somewhere.Karl wrote:Best First wrote:I might be talking utter garbage re the costs and benefits, but the total absence of figures and unwillingness of the political establishment to challenge this status quo concerns me.
Haha! I wonder when Kate realised that by marrying Wills she'll no longer be able to vote!
