I might be talking utter garbage re the costs and benefits, but the total absence of figures and unwillingness of the political establishment to challenge this status quo concerns me.

Well, they can all sit in the House of Lords, so maybe their expenses are available somewhere.

AFAIK they selectively publish expenses (sort of like MPs) rather than actually publishing all their accounts. They only publish individual expenses over £10,000 (src http://bit.ly/ibYh13).

So their dealings are about as transparent as they choose them to be, since an individual could hypothetically break any large expense up into individual amounts less than £10,000 to avoid needing to publish it.
