Thor. With spoilers. Because it's, like, out and stuff.

Not quite what I expected, but thoroughly enjoyable and of the good.
Was worried that they might lose the audience with such an extended Asgaard scene so early, but people seemed to go with it.
Nice that they held back from naming Loki until after Thor was exiled. Quite obvious who he was, but it did just nod to protecting the culprit for those who would recognise the name but didn't necessarily know he was in it. [and there was at least one person sat behind me who fell into this category, though they missed the first few namechecks and let out an "aaaah, THAT's who he is" when he was at Odin's bedside with his mother].
Was Loki an ice-giant in the source? Any of the source, Norse or Marvel.
Nice little cameo for Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
Good Donald Blake touches. Was half expecting a twist in who Stellen was planning to email.
Also good Stan Lee appearance and tie-ins to Iron Man 2. "Is that one of Stark's?"
Also: the post-credits scene. Was that the cosmic cube, or am I just making a massive leap there? Because that's the only thing I can think it is, but it's way out of leftfield.

As far as I know Loki is not an ice-giant
He is the son of two giants though (Farbaute, his father, and Laufey, his mother).
Despite this he was friends with Odin and the other gods, but when he took part in the killing of Balder (the son of Odin and Frigg) he became the enemy of man and gods.
As punishment he was tied to three sharp stones (one against his shoulders, one at the end of his back, and one at the hollow of the knees) in the underworld. They used his sons (Narfi) intenstines to tie him up, and the intenstines were turned to iron.
He is also a shapeshifter, and is the mother of Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipner.
And with the female giant Angerboda he had three lovely kids. Fenrisulven (Fenrir), who'll eat Odin when Ragnarok arrives, Midgårdsormen (Midgard Serpent), who's poison will destroy Thor during Ragnarok, and Hel, the godess of death.

Doing some quick Wiki-ing, looks like Marvel Loki was portrayed in the comics as the undersized son of Laufey (ostensibly a male in this instance, though I can't tell Ice Giant gender) who Odin raised as his own. Which is what they've gone with in the film. So faithful to that iteration of the source, then.
Looks like Branagh had a lot of fun going between meaty period mythology and just cutting loose with exhuberant action sequences.

Saw this today. Waaaay better than I thought it would be. Best Marvel movie to date perhaps? I think I enjoyed the second Hulk as much.
My favs are still The Crow and Batman Begins.

I loved it. Now, a good chunk of why I loved it was that Branagh managed not to screw it up.
I mean, it could have been an utter sh*tfest, or he could have played it safe by leaving Asgard out of the picture entirely and going with the Ultimate Thor thing. It's a pretty ballsy move, to stick half an hour of fantasy into the beginning of your movie. And it worked.
I even liked the romance, for all that people have called it hokey.

Agreed. It worked nicely. I thought the guy who played Thor did an excellent job too.bumblemusprime wrote: I mean, it could have been an utter sh*tfest, or he could have played it safe by leaving Asgard out of the picture entirely and going with the Ultimate Thor thing. Even more than once, I think. I also think the first time it showed it was in a Red Skull plot, only later Thanos went after it. It was the other way around in Ultimate Marvel.Brendocon wrote:Though doing some research (by "research" I mean scanning Wiki entries on the 1960s Marvel cartoons), the Cube was once hunted by the Red Skull...
It seems that that's the plan.Brendocon wrote:so that could actually tie together with the Captain America movie.
They were losing me. But as soon as narrative jumped to adult Thor and Loki, all was well.Brendocon wrote:Was worried that they might lose the audience with such an extended Asgaard scene so early, but people seemed to go with it.

J. Michael Straczynski is also in it, but I don't know where.

Finally saw this - agree entirely with the above. My only complaint - Volstagg was not fat enough.bumblemusprime wrote:I loved it. Now, a good chunk of why I loved it was that Branagh managed not to screw it up.

What struck me as smart was they actually kept the story pretty basic, but let the magical elements of Thor, the action sequences and the quality of the actors fill in the rest.
Portman... jeez.

"I still don't think you're the God of Thunder. ...But you aught to be!" has me cracking up.
You intend to commit TREASON against LOKI, our KING?
(immediately) Yes.
Good. (walks away)

Volstagg should have been fatter. Portman should have worn a few less clothes. Red Skull had a cube once. So did Thanos. AIM made a cube. So did the Skrulls. Both those cubes evolved and went off together. (Super-)Adaptoid merged with a cube. Or with a fragment of a cube, or was imbued with its power for a while. Or something to do with a cube. Anyway, had lots of baby Adaptoids with a cube. Can't remember exactly, did an Avengers comics marathon about a year ago.Brendocon wrote:Though doing some research (by "research" I mean scanning Wiki entries on the 1960s Marvel cartoons), the Cube was once hunted by the Red Skull... so that could actually tie together with the Captain America movie. I always associate it with Thanos though.
I think, in this case, however, as Loki is involved and "Thor will return in the Avengers" that it's an Avengers thread.
Well yes, but I'd expect it to also tie into the Avengers via Captain America. Being as the Red Skull's in that and it'll likely explain how SHIELD came to possess said Cube.Rebis wrote:I think, in this case, however, as Loki is involved and "Thor will return in the Avengers" that it's an Avengers thread.
I'd expect the Avengers to focus at least partially on Loki going for the Skull's former toy. And if they show us its backstory in the Cap film, exposition can be minimal.
