Game of Thrones (Not For Prudes/Boobies are bad mmkay?)

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Based on the "Song of Ice and Fire" books, one damn good trailer for the new HBO show Game of Thrones.

http://winter-is-coming.net/2010/11/hbo ... ment-67523

Books are fantastic. Grown up, R-rated HBO fantasy about a bunch of scheming nobles. Shakespearian stuff. Everyone gets themselves into the **** through tragic flaws.

New trailer. Everyone go out and buy the books before you watch this show. Now. I mean now. No breakfast for you. Snarl, pause the porno and go to a bookstore. Stop whining. It's HBO; there will be plenty of boobies in the show.

DICKS!

I love it when people go "you must read/watch this!"- I usually do, because I'd one day like someone to do that when I say "you must read/watch this!" :o

Noted... though I don't get HBO. :( I'll check out the books though.

Anyhows, I'll have to DL Game of thrones but it looks ace.

Spartacus is ace, series 2 is mega... It's the perfect blend of swords and porn!... Lucy lawless is still hot!

I'm watching it. And it is good. I'll probably start reading the books once season 1 ends.

Watched it. Not a fan of gratuitous sex and tales on incest in my fantasy, thank you.

Pass.

This most recent episode my be the most intense episode of any TV show I've ever watched. It's a struggle to not buy the book right now to see what's going to happen next.

I've got to agree with Yaya, though. The sexual content is a bit too...strong...for my tastes. There are scenes where, if somebody walked in, it would appear to be straight up porn.

Sad to admit, but I didn't know about the incest until this episode. I didn't know those two were twins when it happened and I never made the connection afterwards.

From what I've seen (I ended up waiting to watch the whole thing at once) they have ramped up the already considerable sexual content of the book. I think Rome was one of their big inspirations for the stuff, and I quit watching Rome for that very reason: so many scenes of sex sex sex with just about everything except the classic money shots.

So you going to read books 1-5 and spoiler everything after the season ends, Smooth?

I'm really enjoying this show. Lots of drama and back stabbing going on :)
And I have no problem with the sex scenes. One or two minutes of sex per episode is A okay in my book (sex is a big part of life).

I can't decide about this or not.

Because I've got the book sat on my shelf, and have had for aaages. But the chunkiness of it has put me off reading it until I've got time.

Which I now have, being off work and stuff.

But I'm torn on the whole book/tv series thing. How faithful has the series been to the book(s) so far? Is this season just the first book, or is the entire series just based off the first book?

I don't want to do that thing of reading the book, then getting narked during the series because this or that is different.

Normally I'd watch the series first, then go back and read the book a bit later, picking up on what's changed and seeing how it "originally" was. But I don't want to do that either what with it being ongoing for I don't know how long, and not knowing how faithful it will or won't be to this or the later books. I'll just end up in a muddle.

Suggestions, People Who've Read and are Watching?

The show is insanely faithful to the books, except for a few very minor changes. The author, Martin, was a showrunner in Hollywood for years and gets final rewrites on each episode and has written a few episodes from scratch.

So... what'd you think of last night's episode? Something like "Holy **** what the hell just happened?!"

Is the sex in this series really so OTT? Because I didn't really have a problem with what was in Rome - thought it was all fairly appropriate and rather brief too.

I'm more put off by the clips that juxtapose a heavyweight vet like Sean Bean with some fairly fey Americans with overstyled hair. There aren't many US actors, it seems to me, that can 'do' medieval convincingly.

Absolutely loving the **** out of this series. Seriously, how good is this? Swords, sex, violence, amazing costumes and we've already had our first zombie - what's not to like?

Though I'm giving the books a wide berth while the show is on - I don't want to spoil it by knowing what's going to happen, or by going "it wasn't like that in the book!"

[edit] Aha, just read Brend's post above and sprunk's reply. May well have to pick up the first book once the series has ended.

In other news, I had this really weird dream this weekend - Brend was there, and so were Optimus Prime and Roller. I think I was some kind of mad scientist, there was this dominatrix with nipple tassles and a big black rubber c**k and a Scotsman chasing baby pigeons around. If I remember it correctly, I got my c**k bitten off by a disembodied head which turned me into a zombie and Brend wound up getting killed by a topless woman with blue hair. It was the strangest dream ever.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Jack--I was raised Mormon. Splains a lot.

Emvee--I'd suggest you read ahead, because you are going to ****ing drooling over the happenings in the third book.

Also, some people get all the good dreams.

I had the same dream as Emvee, weirdly. It was amaaaaaazing. Apart from the getting killed bit, I remember it being really awkward because my blood wouldn't spurt right. Talk about embarrassing performance problems. :/

The last episode made me go "oh no, ****, what the [composite word including 'f*ck']. Not Boromir! This can't be!"

Peter Dinklage is awesome as Tyrion. I am loving the **** out of that character :)

How many books are there? And is this first season based upon the first book, or is it a mashup? :)

Each book will be more or less one season of TV, although the fourth and fifth books will probably be mixed together in the fourth and fifth season, since a lot of stuff overlaps between the two. There are five books written. Seven in the series.

He's got about one-fourth of the sixth book written, but he's a notoriously slow writer. Actually, scratch that--he works at a fairly good speed, but the books are all over 900 pages. The third book in the series is longer as a single book than Lord of the Rings is at three books.

I'm not usually one to choose books based on their page-count, but I'm not sure I want to commit myself to reading 7,000 pages.

If I were president, all books would be 3 pages! Maximum! [obscure?]

That would clearly be off-putting for someone who has, for the last thirty-odd years, bought and read and reread every single goddamn Transformers comic in existence. ;)

At 22 pages each, 7,000 pages of Transformers comics works out to 318 issues.

By my count, there haven't been 7,000 pages of TF comics, even if you count US Marvel, DW, and IDW.
