Somebody send this HBO-less idiot a copy.

They left out the last panel where you get the cease-and-desist-from-pirating-because-we-put-the-torrent-there-to-catch-you-mothaf*cka-letter and your wife smacks you.

So I saw episodes 1 and 2 of season 2.
Spoilers!
Hm... as usual, the combination of some tasteless stuff, like the needlessly long baby-killing scene, with the gripping and dynamic. Seriously, guys. Nudity and sex and more nudity, and OH NOW WE KILL A BABY. My erection turned around and hid inside my intestines.
The wolves are getting CGIed to be bigger; that's cool. They looked like friendly huskies in the first season. Interesting addition as Jon Snow sees Craster leave a baby (why does this season hate babies?) out for the white walkers.
"I can smell the cum." WTF? All right, I guess it's her area of expertise.
The Stannis parts kind of work, kind of. Melisandre is really a vivid figure. This actress plays it up very well; she's creepy-sexy and convincingly fanatical. Davos suffers, though. He's such an internal character that they have to show dialogue with his son to bring the part out; even then, we don't get the story of why Davos is so loyal to Stannis. The TV series benefits from its ability to go outside of the viewpoint characters but it often loses the flavor of each character. The books feel medieval because we see them through medieval eyes.
Case in point: In the books, Davos sees Stannis as such an honorable man that he doesn't believe that Stannis is tupping Melisandre. In the show, we appear to have written out Stannis's daughter and wife, better to get to the part where he throws Melisandre on the table and gives her the old "flaming sword."
I wanted something more to this scene, maybe because I spent so much time seeing Stannis as Davos saw him in the books. How fast does this guy betray his honor.
(Then again, what can you do? Evil Sexy Magic Redhead gets naked, demands you impregnate her, and promises Man-Children... If I had a penny for every time that's happened to me, I'd have a lot of pennies and still have Evil Magic STDs. The night is dark and full of terrors. Some of those terrors are really men.)
Theon's bit was great. Straight out of the books, but the sight of his fancy clothes brought the whole thing about "the iron price" home. The scene between Robb and Jamie in his prison was great too. I really like the chance to know Robb in this series. He was slightly robbed (eh?) by being the only Stark character in the books without a viewpoint.
The brutality to children is going to put me off, I know, especially once Joffrey starts brutalizing Sansa. I'm already squirming at the thought. Damn it, HBO. I'm afraid to enjoy the sex because Boobs Cock HEY DEAD BABY!!
Does anyone wonder whether the kids actually watch the show? When the actor playing Bran finishes up the season, perhaps his parents say "You can't watch the show you just acted in until you are older!" Eh?

This season is all about "sexy times and then WE KILL SOMEONE," isn't it?

This last episode was definitely the weakest point of the season. Not much except for talking--talking about Theon and the boys mostly, and a few plot "twists" we all saw coming from ten miles off. Robb gets in the sack with the cutie from Volantis, Jon gets marched along, the Watch finds the dragonglass, Stannis talks to Davos, talk, talk, talk. No Melisandre or other interesting bit players, very little Tyrion (although the bit with the wrong whore was well-played), and Rattleshirt's intro didn't have much flair.
Next week is the Martin-penned Battle of the Blackwater. Should be a significant improvement.

OH. MY. *******. ****.
That was not an episode. That was a tidal wave of television.
My chills have chills. My shattered trousers have shattered trousers.

You live it, so there's a daily visit to the whorehouse and you're never sure which of your acquaintances will live out the year or die a brutal sudden death?

Squeee. Season 3 start was excellent.
A bit baffled at some of the deviations from the book again though. I understand changes need to be made for TV and some of the changes have been good, but some bits I just cannot understand why they leave out.
I wont give examples as I don't want to ruin anything for anyone. I wish our board supported the spoiler warnings!

I have yet to see the first episode of the next season, but so far, their changes usually make the story much better in my opinion. I'm hoping that trend continues.
I suppose you could put the font color to white to hide spoilers...
Spoiler
So what did they cut out?
Edit - Nvm, that certainly did not work.

oooooh yeah.
So far Season 3 is killing it over Season 2. The divergences aren't bad, even if Theon's escape appears merely to have shown how nasty the Bastard can be.
A couple of scenes--Dracarys being the obvious one, Jaime's hand being the other--matched right up to the book in my head. The Hound and Dondarrion's fight will hopefully do the same.
I wonder if the average viewer gets that Thoros belongs to the same religion as Melisandre, given his lack of any creepy creeper stuff. It may not resonate as well once we realize that Dondarrion is actually R'hllor's chosen.
Damn, I have forgotten just how good the third book is. Here's hoping the show can spice up some of the dull moments in 4 & 5...

I think any draggage in Feast/Dance is going to be counteracted by the overlap.
Assuming that they're sensible enough to take the first three quarters of Dance and intersperse it amongst Feast to create a "director's cut" of the story. Plus all the extra "off-page" stuff that they'll probably add.
The earlier we meet the people on that boat the better.
Also the sooner GRRM gets off his beardy arse and finishes Winds the better.

If they don't then I weep for the now-dead language of subtext. That much was outright stated to your face. If the average viewer doesn't catch on to something like that, then most of the work they put into the story is wasted effort.bumblemusprime wrote: I wonder if the average viewer gets that Thoros belongs to the same religion as Melisandre, given his lack of any creepy creeper stuff.

In the matter of things showing up from the book:
Selyse!
Karstark's execution!
Jamie tells (his version) of why he killed Aerys. Excellent moment for Nikolaj.
Hell of a performance from Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage in the final scene.
Non-canon:
Apparently we've dispensed with Loras and Margaery's offscreen brother, and moved straight on to Loras. More effective all round, I'm sure. Although I do sometimes miss the globs of extraneous characters. Part of the joy of Martin's overstuffed nobility.
Littlefinger gets a whore to get a secret out of Loras. Of course.
Robb's got slightly different rationale for going back to Frey here. Rather than going home to rule the North, he still wants to hit the Lannisters where it hurts. I'm... indifferent to this twist. Robb's story has changed so much, and usually it's the most Hollywoodized of the changes. Last season he met a nice girl and fell in love against custom. This season he is still going for vengeance. Eh, whatever. I liked the Jeyne Westerling story, and the original rationale for going home, much better. As long as the R** W****** stays intact...
Overall:
So far this season is killing it. Less of the water-treading, overexposition, and dull unmoving bits that kept popping up in 1 & 2. Dany killing the slavers lived up to the book magnificently, as easily as Blackwater did last season. Loved the use of fire in the fight with the Hound. Vivid. Damn, I loved Storm of Swords. There are so many good moments coming that I can't stand to wait. Only a shame that the Mountain and the Viper's fight will probably be footed up to Season 4.
Although that's a hard call too. They're supposed to spread Storm over seasons 3 & 4, but at this rate they could finish the book in this season. I originally thought this season would end with R** W****** (do not speak of it!) but now I believe in the double whammy wedding theory: Robb's in penultimate episode, Joffrey's to finish.

Great ep. Nice to see Stannis' family on-screen, and the acknowledgement that it's his wife who's the religious one. And of course his daughter's condition sets up other stuff for Dance, so it's nice to see it worked in.
I've been waiting for Karstark to get his noggin chopped off since he first turned up.
