That's a good first step, but still requires a policeman to use a handheld I.D. device, if I'm not mistaken, to determine whether it's stolen.
What I'm hoping for is a transponder that is detected by satellite from space. In this way, the location of anything on Earth can be determined, no matter where it's hidden.
I'm sure the government has such devices, but I don't think it's gone mainstream.
Of course, to take a quote from a lame ass Spiderman movie, "with great power comes great responsibility". Asking the general public to be responsible with a device akin to Spiderman's web tracers might not play out as well as we might think.
