Comic Con 2010

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Comic Con 2010

Greetings program! This is Yaya reporting live from Comic Con 2010.

Okay, I'm not, but I've always wanted to say that. So I again performed the San Diego Shuffle, attending a Critical Care Conference by day, Comic Con by night.... and day as well. Yes, I have the ability to be in two places at once. If you've ever seen the Prestige, you'll know how I do it.

I went as press, again as photographer for by bro. Heretofore are the highlights and lowlights of my experience:

-probably the highpoint of the Con for me was getting to meet and interview Tron himself, Bruce Boxleitner. In Flynn's Arcade, no less! Flynn's Arcade is a recreation in San Diego of the actual set of, well, Flynn's Arcade from the movie. It was quite surreal. I remember how cool I thought he was as a kid when he was first introduced in the movie, taking on four competitors at once during that disc competition. "That's Tron. He fights for the users." Anyway, the guy was cool as ****. Really down to Earth. I was disappointed at first because we didn't get to interview Jeff Bridges, but when I reflect back, I think I would have preferred it this way. Got to see Jeff at the press conference though.

-sitting in on the press conference and interviewing Guillermo Del Toro for his new movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Guys put on some major poundage, but he was funny as hell

-speaking of funny, interviewed Will Ferrell, along with Mark Wahlberg and Eva Mendes for their upcoming comedy. Don't have high hopes for this flick.

-interviewed Michelle Rodriguez (Lost, Avatar) and Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight) for their new movie

-a definite lowlight was the confirmation that IDW no longer considers Transformers a priority, and the fan attendence to their panel was evidence that the fans know it. There were half as many fans at the TF panel as last year. They must have known there would be a scarcity of compelling news on the horizon for the TF comic, because IDW spent five minutes on TF, and the rest on G.I.Joe and Dungeons and Dragons. I was thinking they would have some new big reveals for upcoming TF projects. Only one, a Punch-Counter Punch miniseries, was announced. On the positive side, they did recognize their botching of continuity and felt they needed to avoid spotlight for the time being as to not make things that much more convoluted. They recognized the fans desire to get off of Earth and announced this will happen after this Combaticon arc, involving the whereabouts of Hot Rod. Other than than, it was quite the bore.

-regarding the Tron film itself, the potential here is enormous (it was the big draw this year, hence dubbing this year's Con 'Comitron"). I knew the special effects were going to be mind blowing, but what I didn't anticipate was how incredible the score of this film is. I listened to some snippets of music from Daft Punk from the movie, and it is absolutely fabulous. If done right, Tron could be the new Star Wars. Another thing which I think they are doing right is they are making only the parts of the movie in the game 3D, not the parts in the real world. This is smart because the brain usually adapts to the 3D over the course of the movie and loses it's luster, so to speak. This is less likely to happen the way they are approaching it.

This is Yaya. Reporting live. From Comic Con.

Two days later. From work.

Sah weet. Except for the TF thing. I've got to tell my LCS to drop the ongoing from my hold.

Nice report chief.

Given TF's is a low priority i'd just give it to some random Irish bloke and his English mate, possibly with some guy who only has, like 4 letters IN HIS WHOLE FREAKING NAME on art and just leave them too it.

Tron sounds amazing, the leaked trailer from over a year ago still looks amazing... The new Star Wars tho? I don't see the connection, they are two different types of film no?

Sad to hear about TF, it's clear that IDW have dropped the ball on TF in general...one day a decent publisher shall rise from the ranks and... U know!

yes, the rise from the ranks scenario has already been covered.

Perfectly capable of the job = Marvel

Died = Marvel

Rose from the ashes to fill the gap and turned out to be a waste of space = Dreamwave.

Not sure where G2 or IDW fit into this so... look, over there, Masterpiece Jetfire!

IDW are cartoon Fortress Maximus. Sort of quite good at times, but you can't quite get past the fact he turns into a giant head and we're not supposed to realise his ship's an even bigger body.

In short, requires massive logic jumps to make sense, and you're best off just dismissing it as not really TF.

But has some cool bits anyway.

Granted, it's a long shot, but I'll tell you why I think it has a shot.

When I was at the Con, I passed by the Star Wars booth (which was huge) and I stopped to watch Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on a big LCD screen they had. Despite the thousands of booths on the floor, despite having seen it a hundred times, I stopped to watch. Which made me think "why is it that with all the new material out here, it's still Star Wars that makes me stop and look? Why does Star Wars stand above all else there?"

And so I got to thinking about it and came to one final conclusion. One word. "Lightsaber". I really think that, had this item not been a part of the mythos, Star Wars would not have been the success it is. It's the coolest part of the property. Sure, it's got good characters and the force is neat. But there's something about the lightsaber that, like the sword of the samurai, has everlasting appeal.

Which brings me to Tron. Tron flopped because it was ahead of it's time. Bits and bytes are no longer foreign. But the real potential in Tron lies in it's unique "gimmicks". The lightcycle. The death-dealing freesbie disc. Those things are cool as ****. I don't think there's anything in all of fantasy that comes close to the concept of the lightcycle.

On top of that, the world is full of gamers. There is additional appeal to the younger generation because this.

For these reasons, I feel there is a chance it could in the years to come reach the level of Star Wars as a property. It can't ride gimmicks alone though. It will need the score, it will need the characters, it will need the epic story. But if done right, it could be big.
