Winter Olympics anyone?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Anyone see the opening bit?

First Nations dancers FTW. Liked how they couldn't really dance to the generated beat, but tried anyway. Or maybe the speed at which they had to cross the floor was awkward, who knows.

I didn't like the Nelly Furtado/Bryan Adams Song, I think KD Lang looks more like a man every year and Sarah McLachlan did a fabulous job imo.

Honestly, I watched the bit I was interested in. Might catch a bit of the skiing at some point.

Icehockey!! Man, I can't wait. My goal is to watch every game (which'll be interesting when one game starts at 01.30, and another one at 06.00).
I'll die if Sweden retains the gold. I'll also die if Canada grabs it.
Can't believe I'm still here.

You'd think I would watch this; it's taking place within an hour from my house.

Im callin the Slovaks to upset the the world. They have a stacked team. Canada and Sweeden both have legit teams, but I dont think they'll have what it takes.

Slovakia has a good team going. Gaborik and (Marian) Hossa will certainly provide some goals for them!

Most of the world can't produce films like Transformers, Avatar and Toy Story.
Yet they still seem to be able to enjoy them.

Also: this.

I'm no expert on geography and ****, but I'm pretty sure you can ski in most parts of the world.
Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, France, South Africa, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Slovakia, Iran, Australia, Russia, India, China, Japan, Brazil, Albania, USA, Canada... etc.
And in Egypt you can go skiing on sand.

Sure, most people find it way easier to find a place where they can run 100meters straight forward (or set up a suitable football field, and make a ball out of something).
And yes, the winter olympics is about more than skiing. But come on dude. "Most of the world" is bull**** ;)

Have you been watching any of womens hockey Ob? Its just ridiculous the scores they put up! US destroyed China 12-5 and Canada leveled the Swiss 10-1. Some of those chicks are bruisers to.

Yeah, I've seen bits of it :)
I like how the swiss were all "yeah, we're losing, but we scored a goal against ******* Canada!" (their first goal ever against Canada I think)

I think I'm gonna watch Russia - USA (Womens hockey) today, and then Canada - Norway (the dudes).

And tomorrow it's Canada - Sweden (the ladies), and Sweden - Germany (dudes)! It's gonna be a good day.

It's not that I'm not amazed with what these ppl do in the WO, it's just I find it hard to connect with. Most WO sports require, A: snow and B: equipment.
Both of these factors limit my understanding of these sports, and I'm pretty sure if you think logically about it, most of the world?

I'm not saying it's bad or anything, I just find it hard to relate to.

Can't the same be said for Summer Olympics? You need, A. Summer Weather(at the least, no snow), B. Equipment.

Suppose we all have preferences as to what we like to watch. Honestly I think I think that after Beijing, its going to be impossible for any host country to have a better opening ceremony, at least in the next 8-12 years.

Big props to USA hockey! The men put the hurt on those neutral swiss bastards 3-1, while the women absolutely destroyed those commies 13-0!

and yay canadia for beating Norway....wooo...

And today Canada will play Sweden in the womens hockey. Should be a good game :)

Uh... yeah. Canada - Sweden was not a good game. Canda totally dominated! Which is cool, but not very fun to watch.

Tre Kronor (the swedish hockey dudes) beat Germany 2 - 0. Sweeeeet!

Im fairly confident in saying the womens final will be the US and Canadia. Both seem to be putting double digit scores on every team they play...

And what a final it'll be!

Czech Republic - Slovakia. Nice to see Jagr again :)

Edit: despite the biased refs, it's 2 - 2 between Switzerland and Canada! One period left. Wooooo!!!

What a freakin game! Man Hiller played like a damn champ, too bad Sidney Crosby is Sidney Crosby.

The US looked sharp though, putting the screws to the Norwegians. Gonna make for an interesting semi-final lineup.

Also would like to point out that Shaun White is by far the best snowboarder and possibly one of the best athletes ever.

So this 40-year old veteran skier from Sweden is making his way down the slope, and the commentator makes a comment about his longevity and how injuries have never kept him down.

So what happens next?

As if on cue, the poor guy plows over the hill, loses control, flips about six times, limply slides down the hill like a doll, and lapses into a coma.

Sigh. Hope he's alright.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Things are amazing here in Vancouver. Everybody is in the street and in great moods.

I have been lucky enough to see three hockey games live so far and have tickets for two more.

So far i've seen:

Finland vs. Belarus: Finland looked amazing. Absolutely solid defence.

Sweden vs. Germany: Sweden did no look that good. The team is not as deep as it has been. Without players like Naslund and Forsberg leading the way anymore, the team is not as dominating.

Slovakia vs. Russia: wow what an amazing game. Huge upset. Ovechkin shot three times in the shootout but only got one goal. The Slovaks really impressed me.

I also have quarter final tickets for canada hockey and one quarter final game that will be either Russia or the US.

I'm ashamed that some of these countries I've onlye heard of from Axis Powers Hetalia... and we do get ice skating in Singapore, only it's treated as a novelty more than a sport. The biggest of the indoor rinks has an extra tobogganing/inner-tube-sliding facility.

Did the US just beat Canada in hockey?

Is that even allowed?

Wideload, I feel like the laziest bum ever for not braving the border and an otherwise half-hour drive. But seriously, it's a zoo even here in Bellingham. The streets must be packed up there.

Just sobered up after last night....

WHAT. A. GAME!!!

Quite possibly the best hockey game ive ever watched. Sorry sadie, but HA FREAKIN HA!

Other amazing news is that provided Canada beats Germany (im assuming that will be the case) then they'll play Russia. Oh what a game that will be!

Bad news for Ob though....we're beat Sweden like a rented mule. Sorry hoss.

Canada VS USA was a great game!
I love Ryan Callahan. One of my favourite players!

IronHide: So you're betting that both the US and Sweden makes it to the final? http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-ho ... ff-dE.html (yes, the final, 'cause Sweden sure as hell won't be playing for bronze :p).

Ha! I hadnt looked at the brackets at that point. But yes, I am assuming Sweeden will make a repeat to the gold medal match.

I see us playing the Swiss again (which we'll win) then getting Finland in the semi's. The way Sweeden made them look, come on, they might as well given us the final spot already.

Now, your guys have to hold up your end, Slovakia will be a good one as well as the Canada/Russia winner (I cant make a decision who will win that one).

Then, you and I will start the intercontinental trash talk ;)

I really like Team USA. It's got a lot of speed and heart.
And I'm a big, big fan of Callahan. The way he was blocking shots and forechecking against Canada... wow!
I've seen about 25 - 35 Rangers games this season, and Callahan always plays like his life depended on it. And he seems to play the same in Team USA :)
And yes, you should be able to beat Finland! Especially with the way Ryan Miller has been playing.
...as you can see I'm saving the trash talk for later :p

Canada - Germany. 1 - 0 (the first period is still going).
I hope that Russia - Canada goes on for about twenty periods, so that whoever wins will be really tired when playing Sweden (if Sweden gets the win against Norway or Slovakia).
Can't believe I'm still here.

Dude.... I cannot believe that Canada lost to the US.

The only good thing to come from this..I have tickets to Canada's quarter final game. I will get to see Canada vs. Russia. Then after that Finald vs. Czech.

The only major team I am not going to get to see is the US.

Canada vs. Russia has the potential to be one of the greatest games in hockey history. I cannot wait.
