But no nomination for special effects?
And Avatar is now the greatest thing on Earth? I couldnt care less for a movie.

But if it's any consolation, it is up for the award for worst movie of 2009:

I'm thinking it's a shoe-in.

And I'm completely serious. But have no intention of rewatching to test my two decade old memories.

I'd be happy to see Inglorious Basterds, An Education and District 9 do well.
Everyone's getting carried away about Avatar and The Hurt Locker. Good but not great films.
This may be controversial but has anyone noticed that, minus nostalgia, The Goonies isn't very good at all?

I've never seen The Goonies.
District 9 was good. And I wouldn't mind seeing Up in the Air sneak an award or two. Narked I've not been able to see A Serious Man, though.
I was completely floored by The Hurt Locker, which I saw completely devoid of any hype or knowledge of what it even was. Avatar looked amazing, but beyond that it's just formulaic and wh'everness. Visual and musical stylishness aside, I thought Inglourious Basterds was Tarantino finally stumbling into full-blown caricature territory... it was just too smug and self-aware, plus unfocussed and kind of boring in places. Almost like a series of live action cartoon skits. But maybe that's just me being a bastard after the turd on a stick that was Death Proof.spiderfrommars wrote:I'd be happy to see Inglorious Basterds, An Education and District 9 do well.

Not sure what I would give Best Picture too.
I don't agree with those who say the story in Avatar was crap. I thought it was quite powerful actually. Generic, yes, but sometimes it's not what story is being told but how it's being told.
I think I would be happy seeing either District 9 or Avatar taking Best Picture. Won't happen, of course. Hollywood refuses to give a sci-fi flick the nod.
I think Sharlto Copley got robbed in not being nominated for Best Actor.
How about Best Animated? I see Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Up have been nominated. I think I'd have to go with Up. Hard to beat a Pixar flick in that category.

Oh, completely. Just because the story's a composite of stuff I've seen time and time again doesn't mean it's not told well. I just don't think the "wow it looks awesome" factor compensates for the off-the-shelf plot enough to take it to Best Picture status in my eyes.Yaya wrote:I don't agree with those who say the story in Avatar was crap. I dunno. They gave Return of the King Best Picture pretty much out of a sense of obligation due to the success/achievement of the series. And Avatar is a James Cameron film... he managed to get a shedload of Oscars for Titanic, so if anybody can overcome the snobbery surrounding things and bag a BP statue four an outright sci-fi flick, it's him.I think I would be happy seeing either District 9 or Avatar taking Best Picture. The Hurt Locker is possibly a mite too political.
Personally I'd like to see snobbery well and truly shattered and have Up take outright Best Picture.

I liked it a lot, but what nearly ruined it for me was the shootout in the desert halfway through, a scene which kind of made no sense. At all.Brendocon wrote:I was completely floored by The Hurt Locker, which I saw completely devoid of any hype or knowledge of what it even was.
Shave 30 mins of Death Proof and you've got a good film IMO. But my goodwill for the movie ran out early on in the second act.Brendocon wrote:Visual and musical stylishness aside, I thought Inglourious Basterds was Tarantino finally stumbling into full-blown caricature territory... it was just too smug and self-aware, plus unfocussed and kind of boring in places. Ironically, for me the weak point in Inglourious Basterds was the actual 'Basterds' themselves. The rest I loved though, and the scene just before the shootout in the bar is my favourite of 2009.
Yeah. I see what you mean.Brendocon wrote:Oh, completely. Just because the story's a composite of stuff I've seen time and time again doesn't mean it's not told well. You make a good point about Cameron. He just might be able to pull it off.
Actually would love seeing this. Certainly a flick worthy of Best Picture. I think that unlike other Pixar films, it spoke to a wider audience and actually had a poignantly mature lesson to it. If any Pixar film deserves BP, it's this one.Personally I'd like to see snobbery well and truly shattered and have Up take outright Best Picture.

Toy Story should have got best picture years ago. Actually almost every Pixar feature except maybe A Bug's Life and Cars should have been up for it IMO. Pixar are the tits.
If Sci-Fi is an issue, animation is worse - the fact that it has it's own special Oscar is an insult if you ask me. It's like they actually sat in a romm, decided a cartoon was the best film of the year, decided that a cartoon couldn't be the best film of the year and made up a silly side catagory to wriggle out of announcing that a cartoon was in fact the best film of the year.
I want to see Billy Crystal presenting an award to Mike Wazowski goddamnit.
No way Avatar won't clean up in the SFX catagories surely?
I have watched bugger all this year.
As an aside - i only saw the goonies as an adult and i still thought it was great.

No doubt. It's in my top ten films of all time. It's a masterpiece. The second one is almost as good. Did you get a chance to watch it in 3-D this year? That scene at the end when they were trying to catch the truck was fantastic in 3-D.Best First wrote:Toy Story should have got best picture years ago.
Yep. Three things are certain. Death, taxes, and Pixar delivering great movies.almost every Pixar feature except maybe A Bug's Life and Cars should have been up for it IMO. Pixar are the tits.
No way. Though the Academy did rob Transformers of the award and gave it to that stupid polar bear movie. The Academy is ****.No way Avatar won't clean up in the SFX catagories surely?

I don't give a **** about awards shows usually. So I have no strong opinions any which way other than to know what I like. But I agree with Mr. First on this one.

I've seen episodes of Ulysses 31 with a better plot, and delivery than Avatar.
In fact the 2nd time I saw Avatar I almost left, the 3D is ok, I'm not that wowed visually as I've played a few video games and thus it all looks presty genric, the story is about as complex as Mario, and it's not told in a clever way... Utterly forgettable in every way.
District 9, now that's a story, the duality of a racist bigot forced to turn to the very ppl he hates, set in south Africa! Clever.
