Twilight Fans get Punked

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Twilight Fans get Punked

This is worth watching if you're sick of hearing about Twilight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8GGp_bpsng

Beautiful.

I don't mind the books horribly. After reading the books, I can stomach the first movie (hated it on first watching. We turned it off when the vamps started to sparkle). I've yet to see New Moon and don't really give much of a **** about seeing it- but I'm sick to death about hearing how awesome "the Twilight saga" is. So far it's been mediocre.

Edit: I dunno about that "Twilight fans are the dumbest people on earth" bit. A few of my friends have this affliction but most (try to) appreciate the Stephanie Meyer stuff as a seperate entity.

Might be too late in this house - my parents thought the whole 'exploding-morphing-werewolves' thing was pretty cool. TFs made their heads spin.

Come on, it's average **** at best, but essentially it'd pre-pube wank material for girls.
Plot and acting ability don't matter with this one!

I like the chick who missed class to be there. And the one chick without the sense of humour at the end.

No but for serious. That shirt is seven different kinds of awesome. Words cannot express how much I want that shirt.

The saddest thing to me is that none of those girls actually looked "prepube" to me. They all looked college age.

Age is not an issue when it comes to that nonsense. I know guys who read the books and love the movies. Its just sad.

I can't stand it.

The main character is horribly passive and exists ONLY to be with her boyfriend forever and have his babies.

And millions of teenage girls think that's awesome.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

I think the main appeal is the "love" story. Well... technically, it's not a love story at all, it's an obsession story. On both sides. The two main characters are extremely ****** up. But that's beside the point.

It heavily appeals to drama queens, as far as can tell. But I find it's good for weeding out the crazies in my group of acquaintances.

Some of my friends are all "okay, this isn't a vampire novel/movie. It's barely a good novel/movie, but I can see the appeal, I like books/movies, and that guy is kinda hot, so whatever." ... then there are middle group, and most people fall into this area. They generally are really into it for the fun of it, or into it because their friends are, or they like the movies/books/both movies and books. And sometimes they act more into it than they really are because of friends, sometimes the opposite.

Then, there are the "special" ones. The ones that go "OMGIT'SLIKETHEYWROTEABOUTMYLIFEEXCEPTWITHVAMPIRES!".

Guess which ones I avoid.

Is it the Canadian ones? Cause those are the ones I'd steer clear of....

Actually, you know what, [composite word including 'f*ck'] what I just said. Most of it was willfull exaggeration for the sake of comedy, and it wasn't very funny so it was kind of a waste, anyway.

This, however? This is the type of Twilight fan you want to avoid:

And not just because of the Twilight connection.

Never have I seen such an amazing transformation from Human to Bullfrog and back since that Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror episode where the French nuke Springfield.

They're miserable, self-absorbed, personality-free brats who routinely risk suicide for kicks, ignore their friends and run off for days without telling their parents?

Because, seriously, that's the only level on which Bella can work as an identification character. Well, the film version at any rate.

Frankly, it's not just Twilight that's the issue.

While we are living in a second golden age / resurrection of good Sci-Fi series with stuff like the new Dr. Who, 9, Avatar, the "recent" Treks, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, etc. - on the other hand, Fantasy as a whole is going down the drain.

Apart from the LOTR movies I couldn't really name a fantasy movie/series/book that "got it right". Fantasy is getting watered down for kids, vampires sparkle or terrorize a little town with no plot or idea, magic that 20th level D&D wizards would only handle with 5 protective circles is taught to toddlers at Hogswart... and I could go on.

You can fit all these books/movies into the same "teen fantasy" category (I know I'm gonna offend some folks here), but Twilight, Harry Potter, Eragon, Cirque of Freaks, Artemis Dark, Buffy - etc... - they are all the same. Some are better written then others, but it is the principle that bothers me. That magic and monsters are - in these books - simple made mundane. They live among people just like your next door neighbour. They lose their mystery, their intrigue. They are not handled with the gravity they deserve.

I mean, look at the villains these books produce. Voldemort (who is, let's face it, a glorified lich with not 1 but 7 phylacteries)? For all the hype about how terrible and powerfull he his, even after his resurrection he spends books doing nothing (not even preventing Potter in finding and destroying his phylacteries). Spike? I could never take Buffy seriously with a main villain like that guy. He was pathetic.

Ever read "Wizard of Earthsea"? Now, THAT is how I imagine a magic school. Magic has consequences. It is not to be toyed with. Not like in HP where kids duel and use magic tricks on each other, and dangerous experiments are given to them without any care.

Even Terry Prachett (and he makes fun of fantasy) handles this material with more care then these newbie writers...

IMHO, all this hype will go away in 10-20 years, and these types of movies/books will fade away. Apart from die-hard fans no-one will pull a Twilight or Potter book from the shelves in 50 years and say to his son "now this book is the best fantasy ever". But Tolkien will be on that shelf still in 100 years. :ididit:

George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire, which is being turned into an HBO series starring Sean Bean.

I have things I agree with and things I disagree with in your post, but that seems like the most important thing to say. Those books are like a shot of awesome to the brain.
