Your Top Movies for 2009 (so far)

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Your Top Movies for 2009 (so far)

In no particular order:

Up- Pixar does it again with this heartfelt tale that touches on the more adult theme of dealing with the loss of loved ones.

District 9- Thrilling sci-fi flick with some truly fascinating moments that, for me, will stand the test of time. I feel a cult classic coming on here.

Fantastic Mr. Fox- Funniest flick I've seen in a long time. Wes Anderson deserves a pat on the back for this. Despite super high reviews on rottentomatoes.com from the critics, box office numbers don't look so hot for this niche film. :(

Coraline- Eerily eccentric stop-motion storytelling in 3-D made this one of my favs.

Michael Jackson's This is It- Funny how it took his death and this flick to remind me of the genius MJ was.

9- Another stop-motion masterpiece that didn't really appeal to wider audiences.

Boondock Saints 2 - I dont care what anyone says, it rocked my world

District 9 - Best sci-fi flick so far, baring Avatar being mind blowing

Star Trek - 2nd best sci-fi flick of the year

The Hangover - Best comedy. Hands. Down.

Law Abiding Citizen - Gerard Butler was vicious.

Drag Me To Hell - Best scary movie.

9 - Animation was pro. Love Tim Burton movies!

Inglorious Basterds - Killin nazis is always good cinema.

Havent seen Invictus yet, but it looks like it could be a good movie. Plus its about time they made a major motion picture that involves Rugby.

I won't bother with comments as I'll assume all you hepcats have seen these already. In rough descending order of awesome:

- Gran Torino
- Up
- Harry Brown
- The Hangover
- Zombieland
- District 9
- Slumdog Millionaire [It was released this year, Australia isn't a real country and a limited US release to make it eligible for that year's Oscars is cheating. It's a 2009 film.]

With an honourable mention going to GI Joe, on the grounds that despite being absolutely awful, it was absolutely gallons and gallons of fun on levels few other films could even touch.

Annoyed I never got to see Coraline in the cinema. Really looking forward to Avatar.

Well, if it's a 2009 film, it's in my list too.

Gran Turino was a nice film too.

District 9
star trek

both amazing

I wish I never watched inglorious bastards, it'd one of the most boring, poorly written piles of poo I have seen in some time... The original is better!

Does Dark Knight count? It was re-aired in 2009 February... :D

Naaah, kidding.

- 9 : pretty much the best animated movie of the year for me. I am sad it got no worldwide release and no big cash-in, as I'd have liked to see sequels and this story would have made a great PC RPG game as well.

-The Hangover - I rarely watch comedies these days as they are most often the American Pie/Bayformers variety, but this one was hilarious. I loved it.

-Up! - Frankly, at first viewing, it left me underwhelmed. I guess I could not switch off my logic circuits (:ididit:) as I was expecting some sort of youth fountain reveal (what other explanation is there for Charles Muntz to be still alive when he was around 35-40 when Karl was a kid?). On second watching, I could concentrate on the emotion of the film, and it was excellent.

-GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra: Mainly liked this movie because it was everything I expected a cartoon-influenced movie to be, and what Bayformers was NOT. It even got me into GI Joe briefly.

-Coraline: Another great movie, very strange visual style and has all the classic Burton-esque charm that his last movie, the Corpse Bride lacked.

Of course Avatar will be most likely on the top of my list after next week... :)

I have to agree with a lot of you.
UP made me cry. Inglorious Basterds was better than I could have ever imagined, The Hangover was hilarious, Star Trek was awesome, you probably know how I feel about Mr. Fox and Drag Me to Hell too. oh I'd like to add Ponyo. It was AWESOME. Btw, 9 was a Shane Acker movie, Tim Burton just put up the cash, and it worked, drew a lot of people in. Even though I didn't like the film I feel sorry for everyone crediting Burton for it. If I made a movie and that happened, I'd be PISSED.

It was Timur Bekmambatov's name that made me go and see 9.

Though I think Miyazaki is a genius, this movie was just average for me overall with some incredible moments. One thing about his films, whether average or great, is that visually, he leaves you with moments that just get etched into your pysche and you just can't ever forget even if you tried. Ponyo was a very odd movie, but intermingled with said oddity are visually stunning moments of brilliance.

For those few moments alone, Ponyo was worth the price of admission.

Well. I liked the whole thing. The Japanese kick the pants off the US in this situation. (As in it's just their version of The Little Mermaid story.) Also I forgot to throw in that I live, like seriously, 10 minutes from where parts of Zombieland was filmed. I had friends who were stand-ins and extras, another friend of mine has a poster from the set, and another friend of mine works at a local pizza joint where the cast and crew ordered $900 worth of pixxa on one of the shoot days.
