9 (SPOILERS)

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

9 (SPOILERS)

Post by Yaya » Sat Sep 12, 2009 11:33 pm

Saw it today, really enjoyed it.

Very interesting spin on the whole post-apocalypse mecha vs. mankind theme that's been done over and over again.

Animation was excellent, and some scenes, like the one where the lead characters fight a giant mechanical bat creature on the rooftops of a broken world, were topnotch. Very surreal, very Blade Runneresque.

Most intriguing to me was that the main conflict essentially pitted the intellectual genius of a scientist in the form of a Terminator like monstrosity against elements of his own inner soul, manifested by 9 and his comrades. Quite ingenious a story.

The gray tone was quite oppressive, so I don't think it will be a hit with parents and the kiddies. Definitely a movie catering more towards, well, us.

3 1/2 out of 4 stars (A-, if you will). For me, just behind Up and District 9 for this year in terms of enjoyment.

I only watched a CAM (movie will not be released in HUngary this year... or ever... wonder which idiot makes these decisions) - even so, I loved it. :D

Very emotional movie, with superb actions scenes, you really feel for the characters. The ending was especially intriguing... my explanation is that perhaps the souls merged together to, kind of, create new life? (check the rain drops with the sparking fragments).

It was a bummer though that the trailers pretty much spoiled the whole movie - it doesn't take a genius to realize 1 to 9 are all fragments of the scientist's souls. Also, some scenes (2 and 9 being attacked by the skeleton/cat/robot and the ending) were almost straight-out taken from the 10 minute original 9 toon, so if you have seen that you'd know what's gonna happen.

Definetly not a kid's movie, some parts (the 'snake' using 2's body as a decoy/hypnotizer) were downright scary.

The landscape was very well designed, and as you said, the action scenes were very frantic (but unlike ROTF you could see what was going on).

One thing was unclear to me (audio was bad) - Yaya, do you think 1 knew about the Machine and some other stuff too prior to everything? It seemed to me that he choose to keep answers from the others in order to protect them.

You can also consider that 1 to 9 were then pretty much different aspects of the scientist's personality...

I wonder if a game is done for this movie? It'd rock to have a Fallout style RPG done from this setting.

I took it that 1 did know more, as he didn't seem as surprised by things as the others did.

But I think 9 knew more, as he was the last remnant of the scientist personality and the educational video was addressed specifically for 9.
