Saw it today. Best sci-fi movie in years.
Very unique presentation of a sci-fi flick and a good story with many messages. And of course, some kick ass special effects that blew Transformers out of the water.
Thought the CGI aliens were the best display of CGI technology I've ever seen, more realistic than Gollum or King Kong.
And to do it with a budget of $37 million? Take that Bay.
Give it an "A....er, a 3.5 out of 4.

Finally someone who agrees with me...
There are very few sci-fis I cannot watch to the end, this was another case after that abysmal "Day the Earth stood still" remake.
The whole logic of the movie was flawed - you'd think from a few million aliens, some would try to, you know, work with the humans, explain how the ship works, try to figure out a way home.
The whole movie (at least the 45 minutes I could bear to watch) felt like a very forced anti-racism propaganda. I can understand this topic is still VERY hot in South Africa, but after the third or so footage of showing (in a very exaggerated way) how the agents mistreat the aliens, it just got unrealistic. Even the Israelis don't allow reporters to film how they beat up/shoot in the head the palestins, the cheerful attitude of the main guy was just sooo forced.
Also one thing annoyed the hell out of me - the main character's bloody annoying indian accent. Especially weird since he wasn't indian...
The "prawns" themselves were ripped off from D&D's Chuuls, by the way.
Further increasing my hatred for this movie is that because of the same number in the title (9), it appears we won't get to see 9 this year in Hungary.

I thought it was great.
Wikus had a South African accent, funnily enough I reckon this had something to do with him being South African.
iirc, it says that the aliens they got off the ship were by and large low skilled workers.
I've certainly seen plenty of examples of journalists getting dodgy stuff on camera, I'm also assuming that if this was to go out for public broadcast that it would have been edited.
I think Wikus was just a bit of a spaz who's got lucky and suddenly found himself in an important job that he's not really sure he can handle, that's why he acts a bit odd. He's a bit edgey, a bit excited and a bit of a ****, but generally fairly mild mannered and good natured. Think his forced cheerful thing was just him being a bit awkward and nervous, combined with excited. He certainly had several outbursts whilst he was doing his little eviction thing.

Phew. For a minute there, I thought you thought the film was bullocks. Wait. You did.snarl wrote:I thought it was great.
Will someone explain to me what the hell 'bullocks' in it's contemporary connotation means?
Cause I thought snarlz lost all sense of good judgement and hated the flick.
"See! See how they make a popping noise?" I use that line all the time when I'm cooking. And I make sure it's in that South African accent.

UK slang, your bollocks are your balls.
IT'S bollocks - means it is bad.
It is THE bollocks - means it is good. Like what bumblemuss says, it's our way of saying it was the ****.
And the bollocks is pretty much always a shortening of the phrase "the dogs bollocks".
The dogs bollocks - Now I dont know why, cause I dont make the rules, but it's like... I guess it's like an adult version of the phrase "the cat's pyjamas" or "The bees knees".
Apparently, an animal's stuff is often quite fancy.

Yeah, he's a bit of a ****, but he's clearly pasting on a fake smile, enthusiasm and professionalism for the cameras. Giving it the whole over-excited false bravado thing, then cracking a little bit because he's not really cut out for what he's doing. I thought it was really well played.snarl wrote:I think Wikus was just a bit of a spaz who's got lucky and suddenly found himself in an important job that he's not really sure he can handle, that's why he acts a bit odd. Liked it lots.
Possibly the best alien invasion / robots film I've seen this year. I want one of those ******* exo-suits, man.
Loved that the Nigerians (and some of the South Africans) had unnecessary subtitles when speaking English, but not when speaking Nigerian.
He was a jerk until the very end, really. I don't think he really cared until the end, when he was in that mecha outfit.Halfshell wrote:Yeah, he's a bit of a ****, but he's clearly pasting on a fake smile, enthusiasm and professionalism for the cameras. Incidentally, that scene at the end where he's running with the mecha suit and the alien is running beside him carrying a junk metal shield was for me one of the most ingenious scenes in movie history.

Oh. Sorry for the mistake. Well at least now I know the difference between Bollocks and THE Bollocks.
Another thing that was strange is how the aliens appeared to perfectly understand english but not speaking it, and the agents perfectly understand the alien language, but never speaking it. Were they wearing those Star-Trekky Universal Translators?
I still gonna draw a parody pic of a Chuul being thrown out of a bar with the "Humans Only" sign. (I just started doing parodies for the new Legendary Evils D&D mini sets -one will be very TF themed...)
And it seems that 9 won't even be released in Hungary in this **** year! That is really the dog's bollocks.
On a side not, just got to watch Battle for Terra. Interesting little "reverse invasion" cartoon where the humans colonize a peacefull planet... Has some twists in the story but sadly the characters are very one-dimensional.

I could have sworn they were going to release 9 in 3-D. I was looking forward to that, because the world they are in would look outstanding.
You know me. I love 3-D.

Well there was, what, 20 years to sort out MNU staff able to understand the lingo in order to liaise. And I dare say not all prawns understood English, but they've had equal time for the smarter ones to have picked it up.BB Shockwave wrote:Another thing that was strange is how the aliens appeared to perfectly understand english but not speaking it, and the agents perfectly understand the alien language, but never speaking it.
As far as speaking it goes... maybe it's a matter of being physically incapable. Or just neither side wanting to lower themselves to the level of the other. A bit like when you're on holiday, no matter how much French you can speak if you check the guidebook, it's much easier to JUST SPEAK VERY SLOWLY AND IN A LOUD VOICE.

I thought this was superb. Having the main character transform from a hopelessly bumbling company man to a tormented, desperate savage, then to a vengeful-but-compassionate hero was truly unexpected (for me, at least - I kept thinking it would become Christopher's story) and deftly done. Genuinely funny and touching, as well as action-packed. And yeah, the CGI knocks nearly everything else I've seen into a cocked hat.
I disagree that their was a forced 'racism' message at the start. I thought part of the cleverness of the conceit was that the aliens genuinely were dangerous and slightly murderous and that the idea of 'integration' was near unimaginable. It was underlining just how ill-equipped we are at dealing with long-term solutions to any serious crisis - all we can think to do with a problem is build a fence around it.

Out on DVD.
Someone made a good point I hadn't considered about Wickus' change of heart in the end.
Could it have been because by that point he was more like them, more prawn-like, and that's why he decided to save them? Or did he really have a change of heart?
Open to interpretation, I guess.
