Let me just get this out of the way first.
This movie was an absolute masterpiece, and it bugs me to no end that a bunch of Western otaku are slamming it based on tiny plot synopsis that have popped up on English websites.
This post assumes that the reader is familiar with the original series.
From start to finish, the movie is an incredible piece of visual and audio perfection. The fact that a LOT of people are going to experience this movie in cam-rip fashion actually makes me sad.
There are some huge changes made to the established mythology, all of which I really liked.
Toji (looking happier than I have ever seen anybody look) picks up his sister and takes her home from the hospital.
There's a new pilot introduced (Mari, pilot of Eva Unit 5) and she's a fun character. Kind of like an anti-Asuka.
Asuka's family name is changed to something more Japanese.
The part that's going to drive fanboys up the wall, though, is Toji's no longer the pilot of Unit 03. Asuka is. Shinji knows this. So, when Gendo makes Shinji's Eva destroy Unit 03, Shinji is fully aware that it's Asuka inside the entry plug.
Shinji makes good on his threat to attack Nerv's headquarters after the incident.
The "final" scene, though is incredibly powerful.
The razor angel eats most of Unit 00 (and Rei). Shinji forces his Eva to go into a berzerker-esque mode and...
(let me try to explain this properly)
He basically uses his AT Field to separate Rei's essence from that of the angel. He then forces his own consciousness through both the Eva and Angel AT fields until he "physically" separates Rei from the angel.
In my experience, people are usually totally quiet in Japanese movie theaters, but people were openly weeping at this scene. The girl to my right was bawling.
So, like I said, after seeing this movie in a theater packed with the audience it was intended for, with a giant screen and state of the art sound system, it saddens me to think about people experiencing the flick for the first time in the form of a tiny video file from some guy's iPhone.
My favorite movie of 2009, by a VERY wide margin.

Does that mean Asuka bites the big time in 03? Who's the pilot of 02?

Smooth, I remember that many years ago there was this Evangelion game with a girl that entered Shinji´s school, they liked each other and later she became an eva pilot.
Is this the same girl or an entirely new character?

I think you're talking about Girlfriend of Steel. I'm pretty sure it's a completely new character. The Last Autobot wrote:Smooth, I remember that many years ago there was this Evangelion game with a girl that entered Shinji´s school, they liked each other and later she became an eva pilot.

No new series is planned. These movies are (supposedly) what the director would have done with the series if he'd thought it out, beginning to end, before production started.IronHide wrote:Are they going to make another season? Or just a couple more movies?
I totally expect any Evangelion episode to be complete bats**t crazy, just the way that series works. Just as long as it isnt one that I have to rewind 3 or 4 times to somewhat understand.
And they are awesome!
I'm a big fan of the series, but I think these movies are superior in just about every way.
