Ha! USA is back!

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Coming from a 2% chance to even get to play against them. To snapping a 35 GAME WIN STREAK! HaHa! If only this was the World Cup, i'd have more gloating to throw around.

problem is, it's out of season, the major teams are not even trying...

I know it's hard to stomach but if u faced Spain in the world cup, when it mattered, you would lose.

I'm sure teams are trying. Even if it's some total nothing lame-o international friendly, most people still have national pride. Why? Because if you don't at least come correct, you may end up making a fool of yourself and losing to the USA.

I don't think anyone is saying the USA would beat Spain in the World Cup, but when you go from getting smoked by Brazil to ending one of the longest winning streaks in international play, I think we should at least get a pat on the back.

Or look at it this way: We American Transfanners want to try to bring up socc...I mean, football, perhaps to show you guys we're cool, we're down with the most popular game in the world, we watch matches now and then. If you agree to that, then what would you rather have us comment on, the US playing an international game against a nation that everyone respects, or DC United beating the LA Galaxy?

I thought so.

DC United beat LA Galaxy?

Har Har @ Beckham!

Wait. Is he even still there?

I don't follow football.

Still no respect for US soccer....we gets no love....yeah yeah, its cause we call it soccer. Whatever.

I love to watch any cup/championship games no matter where or who is playing in it. This cup has been just as entertaining to watch as the others (Barcelona v Man U excluded cause Man U suuuuuucked it up and barely put on a game) but its even more exciting because the US team is actually playing well. You really think Spain wanted to snap that win streak? That they just wanted to throw the game cause they know the World Cup is more important? Yeah, not buying it.

Did you watch the second half? Spain came out guns blazing! Howard stopped about 10 shots in under 5 minutes! Our defense was deflecting shots left and right, it was a hellova game that could have easily been seen in the World Cup.

Ah well, im just happy that we get to have another shot at Brazil, hopefully we'll pull out a W.

I do feel quite sorry for the US, even in victory it'll be:

"We won the Confederates Cup! Suck it, Rest of the World!"
"... sorry? You won the what?"
"The Confederates Cup!"
"... what's that then?"
"We beat Brazil in the final!"
"You're making this up, aren't you?"

It's a bit like the Club World Cup. Nobody even remembers it exists until the competition's nearly finished, and even then they can't remember what it actually is.

I suppose that's par for the course when the initial post starts with "eat your heart out you spanish bastards"

In the interest of discussion though it was a great result for the US. I think the fact that the Spanish side contained players who have had very long seasons with the respective clubs (due to said players playing for clubs who go a long way in all competitions) will have factored in the result. Of course pride was at stake, but with a pre-world cup season looming, a few of them will already have their eye on getting a rest in before pre-season starts. As such they wouldn't want to over exert themselves in what is unquestionably a backwater tournament.

But overall - breaking their run (15 straight wins by the way, 35 undefeated in all) is something to shout about.

Its gos like this...

World cup

Euro cup

Euro Champs league

These are the 3 big football events.

After that you have a toss up between the English Prem, spanish league and Italian league.

No offence, but seriously, the confeds cup is considered a friendly, a trainning game, and for most players its the last game of thier season, after probably playing in one of the above big comps.

No player wants to do them selves any harm at this point of the transfer season, and thus no one is putting in the effort. Its also not considered a 'trophy' by any standards of the above.

Its good to see USA involved but I think my local pub side could beat Spain in this competition!

roll on the world cup...
