Evolutionary psychology...

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

...in practice:

It's so true. And, at the same time, somewhat disturbing...

It's an interesting theory, but considering that intellectual traits are not really passed down genetically (Einstein's son wasn't a genius, was he?) it doesn't really have evolutionary reasons. Psychological reasons, yes.

Though to be fair, I have found quite the opposite of this at dinners/etc. - usually the women do most of the talking. Intelligent women start a lot of discussions about politics/religion/state of the Earth etc. It's often a way to 'probe' the men, I know, but I have not really encountered an intelligent women asking stupid questions. More often, stupid women who think themselves as 'sly' and 'wiley' try to appear as if they knew about stuff they don't know jack about.

Quite the opposite - they ARE passed down genetically* but not in the straightforward manner you've suggested. One's child genome emerges from the process of genetic recombination which takes place during the meiosis. In effect, e.g. people with brown eyes sometimes can have blue eyed kids and Einstein's son could have perfectly been an idiot. :)

* Some recent researches show that intelligence is strongly (in about 70% afair) dependent from genetics. The rest (30%) may be viewed as a result of social interactions. That, of course, doesn't change the main point of evolutionary psychology or something. ;)
