'ear you lads been havin' a wee bit of snow recently, ey?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

EmmVee, you are G.O.D!

Seriously. I bet you've got a real big hammer as well.

That is one SERIOUSLY hard accent tho! Unbelievably discreet...

Oddly enough, one of the responses, a lad from Spain, had the notion that some Canadians sound similar to the standard Londoner accent... That can't be accurate tho, now can it? Londoners sound far more distinct, to me, and sometimes ( dare I say?), extreme.

On topic btw, the snow and chill has finally reached northern Sweden, a day or two late, but eh, it's not as powerful as when it hit Britain, so nothing to report.

Interesting. It's been chilly in Singapore for well over three months. That IV tube I used to drain my aircon isn't seeing any use now. :(

It's all a part of the game of Transfans lads, all a part of the game. :D

On an actual on-topic note, we were finally hit by a sh*t-load of snow-storm here in Northern Sweden last weekend, so now I've got an 11-foot pile of snow outside of my bedroom-window.

The communal snow-plowers seems to have done a commendable job however, and today the sun is shining, and the weather iiis sweeet. :)

Also: Welcome back Ob. What have you been doing anyway?? Surely not working?? I did not know such a thing was possible in Sweden nowadays...

Oh, wait! I've just opened my eyes and noticed he's posted in this exact topic a few minutes before I have. Maybe I should take more notice of what's going on in the forum before I post my crap?

Oh, and the "game" appears to be "how obnoxious can I be before I get banned for good."

Answer: Probably not much more.

I pronounce pasta "pawsta"... drama "drawma"... pyjamas is the difference. I do it more like she does it... same with the "florida" and "orange" etc stuff...

I apparently pronounce "drawers" strangely however.... I sound out every word rather than pronouncing it "droors" My boyfriend laughs at me whenever I do it, so I'n guessing I have a bit of a regional accent thing happening there because we grew up only 250 kms apart and from what I've noticed there isn't much difference in speaking patterns between the two of us... I'm a mumbler though. Usually when I get tired. Oh, and I sometimes have difficulty pronouncing "szechuan".

That's a pretty interesting link, actually. I've always thought of my accent as more of a non-accent...

Oh yes- weather, brrr cold. Snow bad, it melts though ;)

a) Because people assume you're sneezing?

or,

b) I bet they don't have many Szechuan takeaways!

I think that's pretty much a given with most people, unless they hear recordings of their voices regularly. It's only when you are able to compare it with others who are less local that the differences stand out.

Or, to turn it on its head, there's the joke about the Irishman who is introducing his family to some friends, and his wife and son share his Irish accent, but his daughter, in RP, states that she can't do accents.

Heh.

I could never tell the difference between the typical American accent and the Canadian accent. Other than the major exceptions of the US South and the Classic New Yawker, the only markers for "accents" in any of English-speaking North America seem to be little tiny things, like the occasional surfer drawl for Southern Californians: "No waaaaay" and the hickish bits of Utah mountain talk: "them mowndins." Seattleites seem to be a bit more clipped and precise than the Californians, but I can't point you to a regional variety even though I've lived all over the US.

You aren't in Vancouver, are you sadie?

I think it might be because I never encountered the word much before I moved here. My sole experience with it was from hearing it on TV- I knew what it was and was familiar with it... but the first time I tried to actually say it, getting my mouth around it was awkward. I was promptly made fun of. It still is an awkward word for me- I have to think of it for a moment before I say it.

No, More central. Edmonton, to be precise. And the accents here actually do vary quite a bit- I hear some really really strong regional/provincial accents, and some of them aren't so strong but there's something to them that makes them just a little bit different than what I'm used to.

Rebis, you're probably right... I don't really think about the way I speak because it's the way I speak. I think I'm going to make a few recordings and try to compare differences by province/region [well, as far as I can without actually doing the travelling ;) ].
