Resolutions.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

For the New Year.....

Mine is to start hitting the gym either before or after work.

Discuss. More than one is acceptable.

I resolve to not have a New Year's resolution.

And since I never follow through with my New Year's resolution, guess I better start coming up with one.

I thought this was going to be about Furman's new mini for 2009?

Actually been thinking of writing something myself, both Transformers-wise and otherwise.

Problem for me is, I have great ideas, but not enough command of the English language to bring it skillfully to life on paper without it seeming quite amateurish.

In other words, I'm not a writer, but am trying to be one.

I can envision a scene in my head, even with clever dialogue, but in being descriptive, I fail miserably.

So, you just go through it methodically, then.

Start with a basic plot and, through subsequent rewrites, building layer upon layer of detail.

Every so often, you let a friend (or several) read through it and see what they think, then either take on board or dismiss their advice and rewrite again as necessary. If you're worried about how they'll perceive you as a result of your unpublished work, just use a pseudonym and pass it off as being authored by "some friend of yours that they don't know who wanted a more objective opinion".

Also, read from a wide range of authors to see what different styles are out there, as not everyone writes in the same way.

And finally, there's nothing wrong with seeming amateurish. Even the greatest writers out there had to start somewhere and that somewhere was not prize-winning material from the get go.

Ah, but here's the problem.

I'm a lazy SOB who wants instant results. ;)

But you're right, it takes hard work. I think if I knew, for example, that my work was going to be published in comic form, even by other fans, I would be more serious about undertaking such a venture.

Hmmmm.

I think I might even be willing to pay someone to draw it. Anybody know any kickass fan artists (penicller, inkers, and colorists) looking to make a few bucks?

Resolutions- I've gotten a bit curvier [ladyspeak for "I've put on more weight in the past twoish years than I ever thought possible"] and I'm starting to frighten myself a little bit, so I'm inching my way back to vegetarianism and attempting to give up adopted bad habits, like pop [aka "cola"... "soda pop"... etc] and other forms of junk food.

Gettng back to the near obsessive exercising and 2 km runs is going to take a bit of work, though, I enjoy smoking and rum a bit too much. But I plan to work on it.

Best writing advice I ever got: Butt in Chair. Sit your ass down and don't get up until you've written SOMETHING.

Indeed. I also intend to lose some weight, and start a sociology related podcast.

I think that "Play For Keeps" should be the official board motto for 2009.

This ain't a dress rehearsal, people.
